“For aquatic adventuring, Enguarde is essential. While riding him, you do not need to press the B Button Button to swim; the Control Pad directional arrows are enough. By pressing the Y Button or B Button Button, you can get a burst of speed during which Enguarde's sword nose becomes a deadly weapon. Needless to say, you won't find Enguarde anywhere but underwater.”
Donkey Kong Country manual, page 25

Enguarde the Swordfish is an Animal Friend in the Donkey Kong franchise, who first appeared in Donkey Kong Country; he shares the most number of appearances in the series with Squawks the Parrot (though Squawks only carries a flashlight and is not playable in the original Donkey Kong Country). The options for a question about his name in Swanky's Bonus Bonanza are "Enguarde," "Swordy," and "Stabber."

Enguarde's original appearance in Donkey Kong Country

In Donkey Kong Country, Enguarde facilates swimming. His pointed bill can additionally be used to attack enemies. Engaurde cannot leave water.

Levels:

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest / Donkey Kong Land 2

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, Enguarde can rev up a Superstab maneuver. When released, he can use his bill to break through walls or defeat a line of enemies.

Levels: Enguarde appears in both versions unless otherwise stated.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! / Donkey Kong Land III

Enguarde is one of only three Animal Friends who get to fight a boss character. Enguarde fights Barbos the sea urchin during the events of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. He is incapable of using his Superstab attack in Donkey Kong Land III.

Enguarde appears in Gloomy Galleon in Donkey Kong 64, and Lanky Kong can transform into him by entering his Animal Crate. In this game, Enguarde cannot use his pointy bill to defeat enemies, but he can destroy treasure chests to reveal items hidden inside them. He can also jump out of the water and pass through DK logos suspended in midair, which he needs to do in Gloomy Galleon's shipwreck area three times in order to open up the cave that holds the piles of gold coins. Enguarde also has his own minigame, the Enguarde Arena. It can be unlocked by obtaining 6 Banana Fairies in Adventure mode, and it is accessed through the Mystery menu. In the minigame, Enguarde needs to jump through as many DK logos as he can before time runs out.

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast

Enguarde appears in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast as a ridable Animal Friend in underwater racetracks once he is released from his crate. In this game, he can ram through anything in his path, including an electrified Chomps. Him and Rambi cannot hurt other racers by ramming into them, but they are unaffected by attacks and Wild Moves from other players as well as all items, except for the reversed control effects and loss of Wild Moves from a Mega TNT Barrel. Enguarde is found in the underwater portions of Salty Sea and Open Ocean.

Enguarde in the comic "Donkey Kong Country"

Enguarde appeared as Donkey and Diddy's Animal Friend in the third part of Club Nintendo's comic "Donkey Kong Country". Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong ride him through a body of water, while being attacked by several underwater enemies. An exploding TNT Barrel pushes them out of the water and onto King K. Rool's ship Gangplank Galleon, after which Enguarde does not appear again.

Super Mario-Kun

Enguarde the Swordfish's appearance. Cropped from page 126 of volume 14 of Super Mario-kun.

Enguarde appears in issue 14 of Super Mario-Kun. After Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong ride on a fake Enguarde, Mario and Yoshi find a box that contains Enguarde. They meet Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong in ropes. Before Mario can do anything, he gets attacked by a Croctopus. Enguarde saves him, but a Clambo breaks his nose. Mario responds by attaching a drill to his nose. Enguarde then plows through the Croctopus, breaking its arms.

Complementing his cute, round eyes, Enguarde's pointed bill proves to be a powerful weapon. One thrust from it will easily down most underwater opponents.

If you combine this swordsman of the sea with the king of the jungle, you'll get an aquatic duo no enemy can hope to overcome. Like Rambi the Rhinoceros, Enguarde can dash to blast through foes. Does that mean we should call him the Rhino of the Sea? Or maybe Rambi is the Swordfish of the Shores? Hmmm...

Trivia

Tiny Kong on Enguarde and Diddy Kong on the unnamed purple swordfish
  • Enguarde gets his name from the French phrase used in fencing: "En garde" ("on guard", "put your guard up", ie: "be ready"), due presumably to his long, pointed, sword-like nose.
  • While Enguarde is presumably one character, two can be seen on-screen in the Donkey Kong Country level "Coral Capers," although this could be an oversight.
  • Early screenshots of the canceled game, Donkey Kong Racing, showed that Enguarde was going to be one of the many rideable Animal Friends. These screenshots also showed that other, differently colored swordfish were going to be rideable; whether these swordfish were simply color swapped Enguardes or entirely new characters is unknown.
