Bitesizes are small fish enemies with a piranha-like design and a reddish belly that appear in the underwater levels of Donkey Kong Country. Bitesizes are as strong as other underwater enemies, such as Chomps, as a Bitesize can hurt Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and even Enguarde by touching them. Bitesizes are either encountered by themselves, in pairs, or in large schools. Bitesizes either swim left or right in a single direction, or move back and forth in an established pattern, both at differing speeds. All Bitesizes drift slightly up or down while moving. Bitesizes can only be defeated from Enguarde's sharp bill.

Bitesizes appear in three levels: Coral Capers, Clam City, and lastly Poison Pond. The only underwater level that does not have any Bitesizes is Croctopus Chase.

Additionally, both the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance versions include Bitesizes in the Funky's Fishing minigame. Bitesizes somewhat differ between the two iterations of Funky's Fishing, let alone the minigame itself. In the Game Boy Color version, red, blue, yellow, green, and regular Bitesizes are among the fish to capture, and Donkey Kong has to simultaneously catch identically colored Bitesizes. Multi-colored Bitesizes that repeatedly flash between red, blue, yellow, and green sometimes appear on-screen, and they can be fished in with other Bitesizes for an added combo. Bitesizes have the same role as in the Game Boy Advance port, if played from the main menu's Extras sub-menu, but in the main adventure, Funky hosts specific challenges that either involve catching Bitesizes, or even avoiding them.

In Donkey Kong Country 3 for the Game Boy Advance, the colored Bitesizes briefly appear during the opening titles, swimming around as the Knautilus speeds by, as well as in the file select menu.
