Instead of containing an Animal Friend like [[Animal Crate]]s, this barrel, if [[jump]]ed into, will turn a [[Kong]] into an Animal Friend. The animal the Kong turns into depends on which animal is pictured on the barrel. If two Kongs enter the barrel, the Animal Friend that emerges will have two [[Hit Point]]s; otherwise, the Animal Friend will have only one Hit Point. If the transformed Animal Friend touches a [[DK Barrel]], he or she will gain an extra Hit Point, instead of releasing another animal or a Kong.  However, an Animal Friend can only have two Hit Points at one time. The Animal Friend transforms back into the Kongs when it reaches a [[No Animal Sign]].

Animal Barrel
EnguardeBarrel DKC2.png
The Enguarde Barrel is a type of Animal Barrel.
First appearance Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (1995)
Latest appearance Donkey Kong Country 3 (GBA) (2005)

An Animal Barrel,[1] also known as a Goodie Barrel,[2] is a barrel with a picture of an Animal Friend painted on the side. Unlike Animal Crates, which contain an Animal Friend, Animal Barrels transform the Kongs into its depicted Animal Friend. Animal Barrels appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Donkey Kong Land 2, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, and Donkey Kong Land III. If two Kongs enter an Animal Barrel, the resulting Animal Friend has two Hit Points, represented by an icon of it at the bottom-left of the screen, or bottom-right in the Donkey Kong Land titles. The Animal Friend loses a Hit Point if injured, and its icon disappears. The Animal Friend loses a life if it loses its second and last Hit Point. It can touch a DK Barrel for another Hit Point, which represents the missing Kong. The Animal Friend transforms back into the Kongs if it crosses the No Animal Sign. Clapper and Parry are the only two Animal Friends in the aforementioned games to not have their own Animal Barrel.

While Animal Barrels do not appear in Donkey Kong 64 or the Game Boy Color remake of Donkey Kong Country, the Animal Crates behave like them as they transform a Kong into the depicted Animal Friend.
