Puftups first appear in the game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest as semi-common enemies. They have two attack patterns in this game. In the first attack, they will inflate, thus growing large in size, making it hard for the Kongs to avoid them. They will also inflate themselves to the point that they'll explode and hurl spikes throughout the water. Puftups can only be defeated with help from Enguarde the Swordfish, who can beat them with his sharp nose.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Puftups appear in many underwater levels. They puff themselves up whenever the Kongs approach them. Depending on their color, some Puftups puff themselves up until they explode and release spikes in four direction; if a blue-tinted Puftup explodes, its spikes are unleashed in every cardinal direction, and if a green-tinted Puftup explodes, its spikes are unleashed in every ordinal direction. The brown Puftups do not explode, and they deflate themselves shortly after inflating. Puftups can be defeated by Enguarde, although he is still vulnerable to Puftup's spikes. In the Game Boy Advance remake, all Puftups are brown, regardless of behavior. During the end credits' cast of characters, Puftups are featured under the "Submerged Seadogs" category.

Puftups also appear in Donkey Kong Country 2's pseudo-sequel, Donkey Kong Land 2. Although they have the same appearance in this game, they do not explode to attack anymore. This was likely done because of system limitations for the original Game Boy.
Puftups in Donkey Kong Land 2 lack any distinction from their appearance in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest other than they never explode to attack. Puftups commonly swim up and down puffing in and out.

The next appearance of Puftups is in Donkey Kong 64. The Puftups of this game are oddly purple and are often stationary, but if approached by a Kong, they will explode spectacularly. This effectively makes them aquatic mines. Also, the boss of the area, Gloomy Galleon in Donkey Kong 64 is a giant Puftup named Puftoss.

Puftups are porcupine fish[1] enemies that inhabit the waters of Crocodile Isle and the bog in Ghost Island. They first appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Puftup's name is a reference to its ability to get "puffed up". A similar enemy, Pufftup, appears in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest / Donkey Kong Land 2[edit]

Puftups in Donkey Kong Land 2 lack any distinction from their appearance in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest other than they never explode to attack. Puftups commonly swim up and down puffing in and out.

Donkey Kong 64[edit]

A Puftup in Donkey Kong 64

Puftups return as underwater enemies in Donkey Kong 64 and were changed to purple. Puftups are usually stationary and act more like hazards than enemies: if the active Kong approaches a Puftup, it explodes like an aquatic mine. Puftoss, the boss of Gloomy Galleon and fourth overall boss, is a large Puftup. During the boss fight against King Kut Out, a few Puftups appear in the surrounding water, though unlike in other levels, they are mobile.

DK: Jungle Climber[edit]

In DK: Jungle Climber, Puftups were changed to silver. When a Puftup is deflated, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can perform a charge attack to defeat it.

 • Puftups were originally going to appear in Donkey Kong Country,[1] with blue tail and fins, but were removed from the final version.[3]
 • In Banjo-Tooie, the Donkey Kong 64 Puftups were recycled into the Swellbelly enemy, which behaves nearly the same as Puftups from Donkey Kong 64: The only differences are that it is orange, has green eyes and mouth instead of red, and is fought slightly differently, swelling larger but not exploding.
