Kudgel's name is derived from the word "cudgel", a thick wooden stick used as a weapon. Kudgel's name is based on how he carries around a giant spiked cudgel to attack others with.

Donkey Kong Country 2
Kudgel is located at the end of Krem Quay, his level named "Kudgel's Kontest". Kudgel heavily resembles Klubba except for his gray skin. Whether or not the two are related is never explained and is therefore unknown. Kudgel wears yellow shorts (red shorts in his official artwork and the Game Boy Advance remake) and, like Klubba, wields a giant spiked cudgel. He also has the ability to jump high into the air.
Kudgel later appears in the "Cast of Characters" segment of the ending credits. He and every other boss are categorized under the "Barnacled Bosses" group.
In the Game Boy Advance re-release, Diddy and Dixie can re-battle Kudgel (or any other boss) if they pay ten Banana Bunch Coins to Swanky. He awards the Kongs with two Blue Balloons if they defeat Kudgel. Kudgel also has his own sound effects in the re-release.
After Diddy and Dixie enter the arena, Kudgel falls from the sky and on the ground, scaring them. He then swings his club at the lead Kong and barely misses him/her; after this, he jumps high up, offscreen, and lands back on the surface, causing the ground to shake. If Diddy and Dixie are not in the air when Kudgel lands back down, they get stunned temporarily. Kudgel repeats his act again and then swings his club at the Kongs, who must dodge him to avoid injury. Afterward, Kudgel stomps on the ground, causing a TNT Barrel to fall on the ground, and then jumps up offscreen. Diddy or Dixie must pick up the TNT Barrel before Kudgel falls back on the ground and attack Kudgel by tossing the TNT Barrel at him. (If they fail to do so, Kudgel jumps up and then falls down two more times, and only spawns a TNT Barrel by stomping afterward.) This cycle is repeated two more times, and Kudgel both progressively jumps and falls quicker and jumps offscreen another time in each turn.
After being hit a third time, Kudgel slowly bounces around the stage for a few seconds and stomps on the ground again, spawning a fourth TNT Barrel. He bounces up again, and the lead Kong must toss the TNT Barrel at Kudgel just after he falls back on the ground. This cycle repeats himself two more times, and Kudgel bounces around faster in each turn.
Glitch (Game Boy Advance)
A notable glitch in the Game Boy Advance re-release causes Diddy and Dixie to be trapped in "Kudgel's Kontest" after they defeat Kudgel (the arena's backgrounds are also sometimes removed), and a loud buzzing noise loops continuously. The Kongs trigger this glitch if the lead one tosses the sixth and last TNT Barrel at Kudgel while he is in mid-air during the boss fight.
The only way that Diddy and Dixie can exit the boss stage is if the player resets the game or, if the Kongs re-battle Kudgel, via the Pause menu. The buzzing noise does not end when the stage is exited, but stops if the player opens up the world map menu.
Donkey Kong Land 2
Kudgel does not reappear in Donkey Kong Land 2 and is the only boss of Donkey Kong Country 2 to not have returned. This is because the worlds Krem Quay and Crocodile Cauldron merged into one world, Krem Cauldron, of which Kleever is the boss.

- "Next up on K. Rool's Hit-and-Run Parade is a muscle bound maniac named Kudgel. He's determined to rain on your parade, so you'd better be quick on your toes. Kudgel will leap high in the air and land with enough course to cause an earthquake. Leap before he lands or the shock will stun you. Steer clear of his club, too, or the next thing that quakes will be your head!
- Kudgel has the place rattling so much, he's shaking TNT Barrels out of trees! Grab the barrels and throw them at his head. After three hits, he'll change his jump pattern and, instead of disappearing into the branches, he'll leap across the clearing at you. Dash under his feet to the opposite side of the screen, then grab a barrel and let him have it!"
