Banana Coins, formerly known as Banana Bunch Coins, are the currency used in many of the Donkey Kong games. They are golden coins depicting a Banana Bunch (or a single Banana in later games) and can be used to purchase things like Cranky's advice or to have Wrinkly save the Kongs' game progress.

Game appearances

Donkey Kong Country 2 / Donkey Kong Land 2

Sprite of a Banana Coin in DKC2 Banana Bunch Coins debut in Donkey Kong Country 2 and return in Donkey Kong Land 2 as the currency of Crocodile Isle. They are used to purchase advice at the Kong Kollege and Cranky's Cabin, to use the Biplane Barrel (Gyrocopter in the re-release) at Funky's Flights, and to play quizzes at Swanky's Bonus Bonanza. A maximum of 99 Banana Bunch Coins can be accumulated in the game.

In the Game Boy Advance version, ten Banana Bunch Coins are used to re-battle a boss, and Wrinkly no longer offers Diddy and Dixie to save their game, in lieu of the newly implemented START menu.

Donkey Kong Country 3 / Donkey Kong Land III

Banana Bunch Coins neither reappear in Donkey Kong Country 3 nor Donkey Kong Land III; the game's setting, the Northern Kremisphere, has Bear Coins for currency.

Donkey Kong 64

Normal Banana Bunch Coins

In Donkey Kong 64, Banana Bunch Coins are used by the Kongs to purchase weapons from Funky Kong, moves and abilities from Cranky Kong, and musical instruments from Candy Kong. Like with bananas, the Banana Bunch Coins have five different color varieties, each color only accessible to a specific Kong: yellow (DK), red (Diddy), blue (Lanky), purple (Tiny), and green (Chunky). There are a total of 949 Banana Bunch Coins in the game.

In total, each Kong spends 21 Banana Bunch Coins on weapon upgrades, DK spends an extra two on the original Donkey Kong arcade game, and 53 Banana Bunch Coins are spent on shared weapon upgrades.

5-Banana Coins

Banana Bunch Coins also have a multi-color variation: 5-Banana Coins, which can only found underneath DK Dirt Piles. These Banana Bunch Coins provide each Kong with five Banana Bunch Coins, in total twenty-five of them.

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Color)

Banana Bunch Coins reappear in the Game Boy Color release of Donkey Kong Country. Candy hosts a set of challenges, one per world, and each challenge's goal is to obtain its Banana Bunch Coin. Candy hosts six different challenges in the game, meaning that there are six Banana Bunch Coins in the entire game. The collected Banana Bunch Coins can be viewed in the "Bonus" menu's "View Items" option of the selection screen. If one has not been collected, a black silhouette of it is displayed.

DK: Jungle Climber

Five Banana Bunch Coins are in each level of DK: Jungle Climber. They allow the Kongs to purchase access to extra levels after the game is completed.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Ordinary Banana Coins first appear in Donkey Kong Country Returns; they allow the Kongs to purchase items, extra lives and Map Keys at Cranky Kong's Shop. The Banana Coins are located within levels and their Bonus Levels. A single Banana Coin or multiple of them are one of the rewards in the Slot Machine Barrel upon the finish of a level. They are also rewarded for consecutive jumps on enemies. Unlike the previous games, a maximum of 999 Banana Coins can be collected.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

The ordinary Banana Coins return in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. They are scattered among the various worlds of the game, and their primary use is as currency at Funky's Fly 'n' Buy. Like in Donkey Kong Country Returns, a maximum of 999 Banana Coins can be accumulated.
