An Animal Barrel is a Barrel with a picture of an Animal Friend painted on the side. Instead of containing an Animal Friend like Animal Crates, this barrel, if jumped into, will turn a Kong into an Animal Friend. The animal the Kong turns into depends on which animal is pictured on the barrel. If two Kongs enter the barrel, the Animal Friend that emerges will have two Hit Points; otherwise, the Animal Friend will have only one Hit Point. If the transformed Animal Friend touches a DK Barrel, he or she will gain an extra Hit Point, instead of releasing another animal or a Kong. However, an Animal Friend can only have two Hit Points at one time. The Animal Friend transforms back into the Kongs when it reaches a No Animal Sign.

Animal Barrels first appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and appear throughout the series until Donkey Kong 64. In this game, Animal Barrels are replaced by Animal Crates (previously the Animal Crate simply released an Animal Friend, instead of transforming the Kongs into an Animal Friend).
