Koins are a type of Kremling that appear in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. Koins wear a bucket on their head and carry around a trash can lid with a DK Coin attached to it as a shield. Their name is a pun on the word coin. By defeating the Koin, Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong can acquire its DK Coin. To defeat a Koin, the Kongs often have to throw a Steel Barrel at the wall behind Koin, causing it to bounce off and roll into Koin from behind.
There is a Koin in every level of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. In Donkey Kong Land III, a Koin appears in most levels except the underwater ones, which unlike Donkey Kong Country 3's, do not have a cave at the end with the Koin. Instead, the DK Coin itself is hidden somewhere in the level, much like in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2.
In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, Koins have a pink variant named Koindozers, which only appear in the level Koindozer Klamber. Unlike Koins, the Koindozers attempt to damage the Kongs by pushing them into the pits with their shield.
Description
If the Kongs themselves approach a Koin from the front or attempt to jump on Koin, he bounces the Kongs back using his shield. Koin moves his shield in the directions that the Kongs are in. If the Kongs throw a Steel Barrel at Koin's armor, it bounces off. Oftentimes, a Koin appears at the end of a level.
Some Koins can only be defeated if a Bazuka shoots a Steel Barrel at Koin. In such cases, the Kongs often have to use a Switch Barrel to change Bazuka's TNT Barrels to Steel Barrels. In a few levels, the Kongs only have one chance at defeating Koin, if they can only get a nearby Steel Barrel by crossing a No Animal Sign with an Animal Friend. If they fail to defeat Koin with the Steel Barrel, they must restart the entire level for another chance.
In Dixie Kong's Photo Album, a Koin is shown under the Kremling Kreeps category.
In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, when the Kongs defeat Koin, they do not immediately obtain the DK Coin; rather, the DK Coin appears in Koin's spot, and the Kongs have go to the DK Coin to collect it. In Donkey Kong Land III and the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3, the DK Coin is automatically obtained by defeating Koin. Additionally, in the Game Boy Advance remake, the Kongs can defeat a Koin with a regular barrel or TNT Barrel in certain levels.
