Klap Traps,[1][2][3] also formatted as Klap-Traps[4] and Klaptraps,[5] are Kremlings who first appeared in Donkey Kong Country. They are lizards with large jaws, hence their name. Klap Traps come in blue, red, and green varieties. They are likely based on Snapjaws, enemies from the Donkey Kong Jr. arcade game.

Klap Trap in-game

Klap Traps debut in Donkey Kong Country. Their attack pattern is similar to that of a Gnawty, except it rapidly chomps in the direction it faces. As such, it bites Diddy or DK if they perform a cartwheel or a rolling attack on its front side. Given to its short size, Klap Trap walks directly through Expresso's legs.

A rare, purple-colored variety appears in Loopy Lights. Some do not move around, while others might. If DK or Diddy jumps, the purple Klap Trap mimics them. In the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance re-releases, the purple Klap Traps were recolored red.

Blue Klap Traps appear in the following levels: Stop & Go Station, Orang-utan Gang, Snow Barrel Blast, Slipslide Ride, Ice Age Alley, Trick Track Trek, Blackout Basement, and Misty Mine.

Donkey Kong Land

Klap Traps reappear in Donkey Kong Land. They were relatively unchanged, and their red variation did not reprise in this game. They appear in these levels: Riggin' Rumble, Snake Charmer's Challenge, Pot Hole Panic, Kong Krazy, and Skyscraper Caper.

Donkey Kong Country 2 / Donkey Kong Land 2

While Klap Traps do not reappear in Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2, they have a relative who does: Klampon. Their traits are identical to Klap Trap's, even though their jaws are larger. Klampons usually pair themselves with Spinies.

In some beta footage of Donkey Kong Country 2, Klap Traps appear in Lava Lagoon rather than Klampons. They might have been a placeholder for Klampons.

Donkey Kong Country 3 / Donkey Kong Land III

Klap Traps have a different relative who appears in Donkey Kong Country 3 and Donkey Kong Land III: Krimp. Krimps are purple and are smaller than Klap Traps. Their attack patterns are indifferent to that of the Klap Traps'.

Donkey Kong 64

Klap Traps reappear in Donkey Kong 64. In this game, they act as the Kremling equivalent of a guard dog.

Klap Trap still chomps and chases at the active Kong if in sight. Klap Trap is defeated by a single hit, but if it is defeated, its jaws still remain and continuously clamp at the active Kong until it hits a wall (however, Orange Grenades destroy the Klap Trap and its teeth). It also has a larger subspecies, Big Klap Trap, who debuts in this game. Some of Donkey Kong 64's cutscenes show one on King K. Rool's lap, referencing the idea of a cat being on a villain's lap.

A Klap Trap is also playable in the mini-game "Beaver Bother". In this minigame, it has to scare a certain amount of Gnawties into falling down a barrel's pit within a sixty second time limit.

Donkey Konga

Klap Traps also appear in Donkey Konga. They appear as minor enemies in the game.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy

Klap Traps are stage elements in the Super Smash Bros. Melee stages Kongo Jungle and Jungle Japes. The latter reappeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. In Kongo Jungle, Klap Traps occasionally jump out of the waterfall and onto the center stage; the fighter takes some damage if they make contact with it. In Jungle Japes, they also sometimes jump out of the flowing water under deck. If hit, the fighter is either damaged and "spiked" or launched downwards powerfully.

Klap Trap even has its own trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee:

This low-slung alligator made its first appearance in Donkey Kong Country. You can subdue it by jumping on its back, but its powerful jaws make it dangerous to approach from the front. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, it swims in the river and sometimes jumps in the Barrel Cannon to stop players from using it.

Mario series

Mario Power Tennis

Klap Traps appear in DK Jungle Court in Mario Power Tennis. They attempt to bite the player, who slows down if bitten. They also appear in the mini-game Balloon Panic, where the player must prevent Klap Traps from biting and popping the balloons.

Mario Superstar Baseball

Klap Traps are obstacles in Donkey Kong Jungle, a baseball stadium in Mario Superstar Baseball. They attempt to bite the outfielder's heels, slowing them down. If the player hits a baseball into a Klap Trap's mouth, they receive a Team Star.

Other appearances

Donkey Kong Country animated series

In the T.V. adaption, Klap Traps were ammunition for a weapon called a Klap-Blaster, rather than soldiers. Unlike the Klap Traps in the games, the ones in the show are capable of speaking; it would often make a sarcastic comment about its role or what it ate. The show also featured an abnormally large Klap Trap named Junior the Giant Klaptrap.
