Cogs (also known as gears) in the Super Mario franchise are obstacles that can push players off of them if they to climb them.
History
Yoshi's Story
Sprockets[1] appear in Yoshi's Story in the Mecha Castle. They are wooden and can make a Yoshi lose a life only if the player goes between two of them. Most of them are singular and only move in response to the Yoshi's movements.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
In Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, cogs appear in the Clock Tower, where Donkey Kong must maneuver a Helibird around them.
Super Mario series
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, cogs can be found in World 1-
Castle. If the player remains under one, they are squished and lose a life. The player is required to platform across them to reach the boss door. Additionally, cog-like wheels can be found in World 6-
Airship. Cogs come in two different sizes.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
In New Super Mario Bros. U, cogs appear in Crushing-Cogs Tower, where they server as platforms that players can use to reach the top of the tower and fight Boom Boom. In New Super Luigi U, cogs appear in Crushing-Cogs Tower's equivalent, Flame-Gear Tower, as well as in Hot Cogs. In the Nintendo Switch enhanced port, cogs return in all of the aforementioned levels.
Donkey Kong Country Returns
In Donkey Kong Country Returns, gears appear primarily in Gear Getaway, where they are obstacles to the Rocket Barrel.
Yoshi's Crafted World
Cogs reappear in Yoshi's Crafted World in Mr. Geary's Factory, behaving as they do in the New Super Mario Bros. games. Additionally, an animate cog known as Mr. Geary is fought at the end of said level.
