Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (ドンキーコングジャングルビート Donkī Kongu Janguru Bīto) is a game featuring the ape Donkey Kong and played with the DK Bongos. In 2009, the game was re-released in the "New Play Control!" series of revamped Nintendo GameCube titles. It has been reported that the Wii version of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is somewhat changed from the original GameCube version, including new levels, modifications of old levels, and traditional controls that have the player use the analog stick to move and the A button to jump, unlike the GameCube version which required the player to beat the bongos to do both.
[edit] Game Overview
[edit] Gameplay
Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat was designed to be played with the DK Bongos, and therefore possesses a control scheme unlike any other game. The only button used is the "start" button, which pauses the game and opens a menu which allows the player to retry or exit the current level. Movement is controlled by hitting one of the two drums, while jumping is accomplished by hitting both at once. Donkey Kong can perform a ground pound if both are hit at once while airborne, which allows him to stun or defeat many enemies and reveal secret banana stashes. Clapping will cause Donkey Kong to clap, which is detected by a microphone on top of the bongos and activates every other move in the game, depending on DK's surroundings. Alternately, the sides of the bongos can be slapped to the same effect. If the player lacks the DK Bongos, a regular controller can also be used with the commands reassigned to buttons and control sticks. Through a combination of these actions, Donkey Kong can navigate the levels of the game.
The game itself is split into "barrels", kingdoms, and levels. Six barrels, four displaying a letter that combine to form "DKJB" and two special barrels, serve to indicate which set of kingdoms can be accessed. Lettered barrels each provide access to four kingdoms, while the sun and moon barrels allow access to the tutorial and final boss, respectively. More barrels are unlocked through the acquisition of crests, which are obtained during regular gameplay. The kingdoms themselves are sets of three levels, two platforming levels and an end boss stage.
The platforming levels are the main body of the game. In each one, Donkey Kong must navigate through a series of obstacles to reach an immense fruit at the end of the stage. During this time, there's also a secondary objective to collect as many bananas as possible, the number of which can be increased by performing multiple different actions in sequence to trigger "combo" multipliers. These bananas are then converted into "Beats" and used as Donkey Kong's health. Racking up combos tends to be a test of the player's skill, as the multiplier reverts to one every time Donkey Kong lands on the ground. At the end of the stage, Donkey Kong burrows into the large fruit and a minigame challenge starts whereby bananas can be collected by alternately pounding the drums as fast as possible, after which the total bananas are recorded and the next stage begins.
After both of the platforming levels in a kingdom are complete, a "Vs." fight begins. The total number of beats collected up to that point become Donkey Kong's health as he engages the boss characters, all kings of their respective kingdoms, in battle. There are five types of boss fights, all of which increase in difficulty in later kingdoms. The most unique of these are the Vs. Kong battles. Donkey Kong is locked into place, and he must battle against another Kong while dodging the rival Kong's attacks. In all fights, Donkey Kong loses bananas every time he is damaged. After the fight is won the remaining bananas are counted to determine what crest(s) are received; up to four are awarded for each kingdom, ranging from bronze to platinum.
