"Vehicle troubles? It's dangerous to go alone--take one of these!"
Funky Kong, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

A Crash Guard is a purchasable item that appears in Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It can be bought at Cranky Kong's Shop in the former game, but only if playing in New mode, while in the latter game, it is purchased from Funky's Fly 'n' Buy and is available at any time. In DKCR 3D, the Crash Guard greatly resembles the Banana Juice, though with a baby-blue coloration, while in Tropical Freeze, it takes the appearance of a shiny blue shield, lined with silver and with three small, metal circles positioned near the top. After buying one, the player must equip it before starting a level. During the level, the item allows the player to sustain two extra hits while riding in a Rocket Barrel or Minecart, (making it only really useful for those levels). This item can be especially useful in DKC:TF, as the game already allows vehicles to take two hits, so the item makes these levels all the easier. To compensate, however, the item only works once and won't respawn after dying. Additionally, the player is unable to restore any of the extra hit points provided by it.

Trivia

  • When highlighting the item on the selection-screen, Funky Kong says: "It's dangerous to go alone". This is a reference to the line that the old man said to Link in The Legend of Zelda when he first gave Link his sword.
