Template:Character-infobox King Zing is the boss of Krazy Kremland in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2. He appears in the levels Rambi Rumble and King Zing Sting. When Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong first enter the level, they see a Squawks Barrel that they must jump into to transform into Squawks and fight King Zing, making him the first boss in the series to be fought against using an Animal Friend.

Rambi Rumble

King Zing appears near the end of Rambi Rumble. Here, he begins to chase Diddy and Dixie (who have transformed into Rambi) upon reaching his location, and chases them until they reach the end of the level. Unlike with the normal sized Zingers, Rambi can't attack or jump on King Zing, so all that the player can do is flee from him. King Zing's stinger is not present.

In the Donkey Kong Land 2 version of the level, King Zing does not appear.

King Zing Sting

King Zing Sting battle in the SNES version

In order for Squawks to score a hit on King Zing, he has to hit King Zing's stinger with his eggs. After an egg hits King Zing, he starts to flash yellow and red before returning to normal, resuming his normal patrol around the level, but going a little faster. If Squawks hits him again, he turns red and starts chasing Squawks while shooting out stingers in all directions three times before returning to his normal state.

After Squawks hits him in the stinger six times, he transforms into a normal Zinger, turns red and shields himself with four yellow Zingers that surround him. King Zing then starts to chase Squawks again. Squawks has to defeat all four yellow Zingers quickly, as they will regenerate if not beaten fast enough. Once they are all defeated, King Zing becomes a yellow Zinger and it takes three more hits to finally defeat him.

The boss fight can vary in speed from game cartridge to game cartridge because two versions of the game were released.

In Donkey Kong Land 2, the battle with King Zing is similar, but after being struck, he will not fire stingers, and instead will home in on Squawks while invulnerable, before returning to his normal zig-zag flight pattern. After being struck a few times however, King Zing will begin to spawn normal Zingers. These Zingers will appear behind him as he moves and will remain stationary. They will shortly disappear, and act as obstacles during the battle as King Zing gets faster and faster with each hit, continuously spawning Zingers.

In the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, the King Zing battle is hardly changed. The only differences are that King Zing is slower, his stingers are faster, and he takes one more hit in his last phase to go down. Also, his stingers in the remake only make one sound per blast, instead of an echoing sound.

Trivia

  • Screech's theme song "Bad Bird Rag" plays in the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 2, while King Zing is chasing Rambi through the stage, although the original song is still present in the sound test menu.
  • King Zing is the only boss in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest where Diddy Kong's and Dixie Kong's boss encounter eye popping animation is not shown upon encountering.
