- “This mole's on patrol, looking to dig the ground out from under Donkey's feet. He's in charge of the Mad Mole Holes!”
- —Donkey Kong Land manual, page 21
Hard Hat, also known as Buroughs[1] during development of his debut game, is a miner-helmet wearing mole and a boss in the game Donkey Kong Land. He is fought in the level Mad Mole Holes.
Hard Hat is encountered in the third area of Donkey Kong Land, Monkey Mountains & Chimpanzee Clouds. The fight against Hard Hat, is perhaps intentionally similar to a game of Whack-a-Mole; Hard Hat will pop out of one of three holes and try to throw his hat at either Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong, and whichever Kong is currently being used must avoid this attack and bash Hard Hat on the head while his hat is off. After being hit repeatedly Hard Hat will begin attacking faster, though after a few more hits he will be defeated.
