A Kowalee, as seen in-game

Kowalees are uncommon enemies in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They are large purple koala enemies wearing a black tie, and they move around in flying carriages reminiscent of a Koopa Clown Car. Kowalees only appear in the level Golden Temple.

Kowalees occasionally fly into the Kongs' way and throw an unlimited supply of bombs at them, similar to Lakitus throwing Spinies in the Super Mario series. Kowalees are bigger than Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, who must defeat them to safely pass them. The Kongs can defeat Kowalees by picking up one of their bombs and throwing it back at them or by jumping on them.

In a concept artwork, Kowalees have gray fur like real world koalas.
