Winky the Frog is an animal buddy from the original Donkey Kong Country. Since he is a frog, Winky can jump extremely high. He can also defeat enemies that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong cannot defeat by themselves. Additionally, Winky is one of Cranky Kong's favorite animal buddies (along with Expresso the Ostrich). However, Winky is only playable in one game: the least number of playable appearances of all the animal buddies. In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, a Winky figurine can be seen in Cranky Kong’s Monkey Museum. Winky has similar abilities to another animal buddy, Rattly the Rattlesnake. Cranky Kong references him in the Donkey Kong 64 instruction booklet.

In the Club Nintendo comic "Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24", Cranky and Kiddy Kong are briefly seen riding Winky to an airport.

Trivia

  • Cranky Kong expressed desire in the Donkey Kong 64 players manual that poor Winky and Expresso should appear in the game, not that swordfish or that "bone-brained rhino that always seems to get in the games".
  • Flibbits, the tropical frogs from Banjo-Kazooie, were based on Winky's design.
  • In Banjo-Tooie, the evil witch Gruntilda let her last name, Winkybunion, slip out during the final boss fight. Banjo proceeds to call her "Winky".
