Kabooms are red TNT Barrel wearing members of the Kremling Krew.

Kabooms first appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest as semi-common enemies. Kabooms resemble red versions of Klobbers, but instead of wearing a regular barrel like their green cousins, Kabooms wear TNT Barrels. This makes them extremely dangerous as a simple touch will cause them to explode, taking out themselves and either Diddy or Dixie Kong. Kabooms can be defeated by either throwing something (such as a barrel or crate) at them from a distance, thus igniting them (this will also take out any enemies near a Kaboom). Kabooms can also be thrown and used like a normal TNT Barrel - the Kongs must jump on its head in order to use them this way though. Kabooms are predominantly found in the Lost World and K. Rool's Keep.

Kabooms make a return appearance in Donkey Kong 64. In this game, they are rarer than before, found only in Angry Aztec and Gloomy Galleon. Their attack method is the same as before though - they charge at one of the game's five playable Kongs, attempting to damage them with an explosion. Kabooms can be defeated by throwing an orange grenade at them, or by firing fruit from the Kongs' shooters. Interestingly enough, a shockwave attack also takes them out, but it'll hurt the Kongs during the process. Kabooms also appear in Diddy Kong's minecart challenge in the area Jungle Japes. In this area, they will jump of edges and explode, trying to take Diddy out with them. On a side note, when a Kaboom chases a Kong in this game, they'll automatically self-destruct after about 5 seconds.

Three Kabooms also show up in Diddy's segment of the DK Rap; they end up being blown up by Diddy with an orange grenade.

Trivia

  • The name Kaboom obviously comes from Kaboom's habit of exploding violently.
  • Whenever a Kaboom starts to run or makes a quick turn, it makes a noise similar to tires screeching.
  • Occasionally in Donkey Kong 64, Kabooms can be heard saying "C'mon" in a very Daffy Duck-like voice. Also, whenever a Kaboom is defeated, all that remains of them is a pile of ash with two blinking eyes on top.
  • Kabooms are related to Klobbers and presumably Klasps and TNT Knockas, two other TNT Barrel wearing Kremlings who act as suicide bombers.
