Animal Tokens are large, golden tokens from Donkey Kong Country that come in the shapes of the game's four rideable Animal Buddies: Rambi, Expresso, Enguarde and Winky.
Animal Tokens are semi-rare, and are sometimes rewarded as prizes for the completion of Bonus Areas. If Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong manage to collect three tokens of the same Animal Buddy, they will be warped to a secret area, where the player has control over the represented Animal Buddy. In the secret area, the player will have ninety-nine seconds to collect as many Mini Animal Tokens as possible. Once the time limit expires, the Mini Animal Tokens will be exchanged for Extra Lives; every one-hundred Mini Animal Tokens that area exchanged will yield an Extra Life (excess tokens are lost).
