Various types of Crates seen in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

A Crate is an object appearing first in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Crates could be broken by Ground Pound to open them and release either Stars or a Key. These crates on the ground were called Stationary Crates. Balloons held crates in the air, and they could be shot down by a Yoshi Egg.

The Crate later appeared in Super Mario 64. They were items that could be picked up and thrown at an enemy, usually containing Coins. A different, specific crate appeared in Jolly Roger Bay on the bridge of the sunken ship. This specific crate was larger and had a darker shade of color. It would slide on the bridge of the sunken ship. Being hit by such crate would be marked by a lose of life.

Crates also were in the Donkey Kong Series with the notable Animal Crate where an Animal Buddy could be obtained. In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, they were thrown like Barrels, but broke on contact, much like the Vine Barrel from Donkey Kong Country.

A Crate is also an item container featured in the Super Smash Bros. series. Like all other containers, the Crate must be broken before the items inside can be used in battle. To break the carrier, the wooden Crate could either be picked up and tossed in the air, or be attacked repeatedly on the ground. Crates could also be thrown at opponents, although it was difficult to hit other fighters, as throwing the cumbersome container took a long amount of time. Sometimes, Crates would explode under enough stress, damaging all nearby fighters. In the original Super Smash Bros., the Crate held one to three items, and was also extremely heavy. In fact, only Donkey Kong could lift up the Crate and walk around with it; all the other fighters could only pick up the container and toss it while they stay still.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Crate's carrying capacity was increased, revealing anywhere from three to five items when broken. The Crate was still very heavy, although all fighters could pick up the container and walk with it (albeit most could only walk very slowly because of the container's weight). Again, only Donkey Kong could walk at a relatively normal speed with a Crate in hand.

Crates also appear in Super Mario Galaxy, where they are stationary items that can be broken using the spin to reveal items, often Star Bits or coins

The Crate, along with the Barrel, returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, this time it will change its appearance depending on the environment. For example, if it is in a Star Fox stage, it will turn into a chrome Crate. This does not change its effect, however. The game also introduces the Rolling Crate, a Crate that slides across the floor, and the Blast Box, a dangerous item that could explode if it is thrown.

The crates from the first game also appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and shared the same function as the first game. They appeared Rightside Down Galaxy and the Upside Dizzy Galaxy, where Mario has to break all of the crates within 20 seconds in order to get a Power Star. There are also metal-edged variants of crates, which are a little different to the normal ones. These ones are a bit stronger - once a fireball (from Fire Mario or Fire Luigi) destroys one, the fireball disappears instead of burning through it and destroying other crates in the way like the normal ones.

Super Smash Bros. Melee Trophy

File:Trophy115.PNG A Crate will release lots of items when it's broken open. It's very heavy, so unless your character is strong, you’ll walk slowly while under its burden. You can throw Crates up, down, left or right, but it's hard to hit opponents because the throwing process takes time. Every now and then, a Crate will explode under duress.

Crates File:Crates Trophy Brawl.jpg N64 Super Smash Bros. Item holders. You can destroy these to get at the items they contain, but be careful, because they will sometimes explode when broken. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, crates were uniform in design, but this time around, their appearance will change to match the stages. They'll sometimes look futuristic--other times, they'll look like presents with fancy ribbons.

Rolling Crates File:Rolling Crates Trophy.jpg Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl Special crates that look like normal ones but have four wheels attached to the undersides. Try to destroy these and they will go rolling along, smashing everyone in their path. When a rolling crate is destroyed, it will reveal the same sorts of items found in normal crates. You can also jump on a rolling crate for a fun ride.
Blast Box File:TrBlast box.jpg Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl An explosive-filled box that will detonate when the box is broken. The box can be smashed with normal attacks and will also catch fire and blow up if it's exposed to any flame. Unlike ordinary crates, blast boxes do not change their appearance from stage to stage. There's one fundamental rule when dealing with these items: be out of range when they blow.
