Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[1] are the upcoming fourth installments of the Super Smash Bros. series being developed for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Like previous games in the series, they are being developed by Sora Ltd. and directed by Sora Ltd. founder Masahiro Sakurai. On June 2012, it was announced that Sora Ltd. is working alongside Namco Bandai Games in developing the games.[2] In the Nintendo Direct of E3 2013, Mega Man from the Mega Man series by Capcom was announced as the third guest character of the series, after Snake and Sonic from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. During a Q&A with Masahiro Sakurai, during 2013's E3, it was revealed that both games may not come out at the same time. It was also revealed previous characters may not make it due to the 3DS's space limitations.[3]

Gameplay

Not much is known about the two versions currently. Final Smashes will return from the previous installment in the series, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.[4] Also, the "tripping" mechanic from the previous installment has been removed. It was also stated that the games cannot crossplay, but can send customized fighters to each version [5]; details on this have not been revealed. In an interview, it was revealed that attack directions could be chosen when customizing.[6] The game's speed has been said to have been increased from that of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and is more along the line of Super Smash Bros. Melee's game speed.

On an additional note, it has been stated that the Adventure Mode for the two titles will not be like Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary.[7]

Also, touch screen controls for both consoles will not be included.

3DS version

The 3DS version has a cel-shaded graphical style, the characters being given outlines so that they can be seen better from a distance.[4] However, there is an option to make the outlines thinner or make them disappear completely.[8] The stages in this version are mostly based around handheld games.[4] The bottom screen will be used for showing the characters' damage.Template:Refneeded

Wii U version

The Wii U version has HD graphics along with stages mostly from console games.[4] It is not yet known what the Wii U's GamePad touch screen will be used for.

It has been confirmed that due to the limitations of the 3DS, there will be fewer characters to choose from than in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and some will be left out in favour of newcomers. So far, 15 playable characters have been officially confirmed, consisting of 12 veterans and 3 newcomers:

Stages

According to Masahiro Sakurai, the 3DS version of the game is going to feature more stages based on games for Nintendo handhelds, while the Wii U version is to feature more stages based on home console titles.[4] Both games will share some stages known to the series, albiet a bit diffrent in appearance, such as Battlefield or games set on both consoles such as Animal Crossing.
