Template:Species-infobox Humans are one of the many sapient species that appear throughout the Mario franchise. They are not nearly as numerous as other species, such as Toads, Piantas, Goombas, and Koopa Troopas, with the exception of the Metro Kingdom.

Some instances of humans are implied. For example, the skeletons of what appear to be humans can be found shackled in chains in several of the sunken ships in the area Gloomy Galleon in Donkey Kong 64.

In an early version of Super Mario Sunshine, human citizens were originally planned to appear, but they were removed. One human disguised as a Pianta, Il Piantissimo, remains in the final game.

Species

In Super Mario Odyssey, New Donk City is home to realistic humans known as New Donkers, who form most of the city's population. With the exception of New Donkers, most humans in the Mario franchise have designs that are either cartoonish (such as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach) or anime-esque (such as the various NPCs in early Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games). In contrast to the New Donkers, who are virtually identical to Homo sapiens,[1] the cartoonish humans have officially been referred to as Homo nintendonus on at least one occasion.[2] Although Homo nintendonus differ noticeably from New Donkers in regard to anatomical features and their demonstration of various superhuman abilities, both are nevertheless recognized as humans.[3]
