This is a list of glitches in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. All names are conjectural unless otherwise specified.

Freezes

Battle softlock

Sometimes, after defeating an enemy, the battle will not end, and any reward boxes will not open. The only way to fix the glitch is to restart the game.[1]

A similar glitch can also happen with the Nabbit battle, with the group stuck facing the Paper Boos summoned by him with no turns ever passing. Like the previous glitch, fixing involves restarting the game.[2]

Berries and Yoshi race freeze

If the player accesses Mount Brrr by skipping the first visit to Gloomy Woods (and, by extension, the berry-picking task for Wiggler, the race against Yoshi, the Kamek minigame, and the fight against Wiggler and Kamek), and attempts to return, the Kamek minigame cutscene will activate, but the group will be able to move during the cutscene. Attempting to return to the area where Wiggler asks for 10 berries will freeze the game.[citation needed]

King Bob-omb freeze

If the group uses glitches to reach the elevator leading to King Bob-omb on Mount Brrr (without opening the door in front of it), then the game will freeze after entering the summit area, followed by resetting to the Home Menu.

King Boo freeze

In the boomerang section in the fight with King Boo, the game sometimes freezes with music playing. The only way to exit this state is to restart the game.[3]

King Boo skip freeze

If the player uses a glitch to skip the King Boo section of Gloomy Woods, then attempts to hit the L or M Block that makes platforms appear in the room before the battle, the game will freeze, followed by it shutting down before attempting to restart it. When restarting the game, it may freeze again, forcing the player to exit the game via the Home menu.[4]

Mount Brrr tutorial freeze

If the player skips the first visit to Mount Brrr and then uses Trio Drill on the final rock wall in the tutorial area, the game will crash to the Home Menu.[5] If the player uses Trio Drill on the other side of the wall, the trio will clip through it as if it did not exist.

Paper Fuzzy freeze

In Paper Toad Freeze-Out and Final Smash, if Paper Mario attempts to defeat one of the Paper Fuzzies before they attack, the game will freeze. If Paper Mario counterattacks the Paper Fuzzy, the Paper Fuzzy leaves the battle, causing the battle to continue indefinitely, forcing the player to restart the game.

Stuck Nabbit glitch

In Bad Nabbit, Nabbit can sometimes be pushed outside of the area boundary, leaving him standing on air next to the torches. This makes the mission unwinnable, requiring the player to exit the mission and try again.[6]

Thoughtful Toad softlock

If the player walks up to a Toad with a thought bubble (like the Know-It-All Toads) in the center of the Sunbeam Plains Toad village, he may not speak when prompted, requiring the player to restart the game. Normally, this Toad will give the player the Mushroom Foraging mission.

Graphics

Broken Luigi graphics

If the player accesses the Luigi-only part of Gloomy Woods with Mario and Paper Mario via glitches, then watches the Starlow cutscene, they will be able to enter areas inaccessible in Trio Grab. This can result in several graphical oddities:[7]

  • If they turn left and enter the first Luigi-only area, the Trio Grab graphics will be broken, with a random combination of Mario and Paper Mario floating over Luigi's head.
  • Exiting Gloomy Woods in Trio Grab, then exiting the form will turn Luigi into a T-posing Mario.
  • Entering a Toad House and then exiting Trio Grab form turns Luigi into a green Toad, who can jump and move like normal.

Additionally, in certain locations, exiting Trio Grab will freeze the game. It can also softlock if the player starts a cutscene in this form.

Invisible barrier shatter glitch

Activating the laser statues in Twinsy Tropics while the barrier is gone will cause them to start firing into space. If all three are hit, then the air above the pipe will shatter into pieces, as if there was an invisible barrier.

Paper Fuzzy Drill Shell size glitch

If the player uses Drill Shell on a Paper Fuzzy without defeating it, in spite of its size, it always appears medium-sized, though it can still make the size's sound.

Pipe stare glitch

If Bowser's Castle is skipped via a glitch, and then the group returns to the outside area before the pipe leading there in Twinsy Tropics, they will briefly stand still and stare at the green pipe in the middle of the area, despite it not having a crystal barrier around it.

Physics

NOTE: These glitches result from how Mario and/or other characters and objects interact with the world.

Doop Doop Dunes clips

Nabbit Doop Doop Dunes clip

After Nabbit steals the group's hammers in Doop Doop Dunes, the player should hit the switch and jump onto the ledge. Now, they should go to the right wall, follow it down until they are stopped by a seam or corner, then push +Control Pad right until everyone is bunched together. Then they should go up and right for about half a second, then down and right again to clip Mario through the wall. Once inside, the player can either use Trio Grab or move up and down until everyone clips out of bounds.[8]

From here, there is not much to do, but the player can walk to the Lakitu Info Center on the cliff overlooking the area, which lets them enter a small part of Mount Brrr early and earn some experience points from the Bullies there.

Doop Doop Dunes clip in first room

In the first area of Doop Doop Dunes, to the top left of the area, there is some cacti on a ledge, and two rooms just on the ground in front of the ledge. If the player makes the group walk into the right corner of the rightmost of the two rocks, then walk left slightly before returning, they can clip them inside and out of bounds.[9]

Doop Doop Dunes clip in room right of Toad village

In the room just right of the Toad village in Doop Doop Dunes, there is a rock and sign next to the entrance. By walking into the bottom-right corner of this rock and moving Circle Pad left and right slightly, the group can be clipped into this rock, at which point they will fall out of bounds. This can be useful in Desert Rescue Party.[10]

Doop Doop Dunes Grotto out of bounds

In the room of the Doop Doop Dunes Grotto with the pipe to the Toad village, there is an area with a moving platform and a red switch on the wall where the path splits. Here, the player can go to a certain rock and move carefully, and the group should clip through. From here, they can walk straight across the water and out of bounds.[11]

Drill blasting glitch

By climbing a dirt wall and dashing towards an open edge, while holding the opposite direction, the player can have the group flung far out of bounds in the opposite direction. This can be used to enter otherwise unreachable areas or skip parts of the game.[12]

Gloomy Woods clips

East Gloomy Woods clip

In the room with the dirt wall, the group can drill near a few berries to collect for Wiggler. The player should walk into the top-right corner near the entrance and then walk up into the wall for about half a second before going back down. The player should eventually be able to clip through the corner. By using Trio Grab or simply by moving up and down, the player should be able to get Luigi and Paper Mario out of bounds.[13]

The player can now walk anywhere in the room by going outside the map and around. This can allow them to enter the west part of Gloomy Woods early if they have Trio Glider by going underneath the entrance to the left and flying upwards or cross the stream without Trio Drill, allowing them to skip a few rooms in the area.

Fence clip

In the part of Gloomy Woods with the Kamek battle and various logs that the group have to climb onto with bounce panels, there is a small section of a wall that the group can walk through with careful positioning. It is not much - they cannot walk forward enough to fall off the log and completely out of bounds - but it allows them to stand in the middle of the wall, on what appears to be thin air.

Log clipping

At the north end of the first room on the west side of Gloomy Woods, there is an area with a gate and a few logs to the right of it. By standing on the left edge of the nearest log, and then moving up and down carefully, it is possible to clip the group inside the wall and out of bounds.

There is another way for the player to go out-of-bounds in the same area. From where the group enters from Sunbeam Plains, the player should go north until they reach an exit with a wall on the left and a lake and spiderweb on the right. They should then go towards the corner of the left wall so the group is facing it, then press up so they are closer together. Now, the player should walk up slightly, hold left for about a second, and then walk back down and left near the corner, resulting in Mario being inside the wall. Now, the player should either use Trio Grab or keep moving left and right until Luigi and Paper Mario also clip through. They can now go anywhere on-screen.[14]

Mushroom room Gloomy Woods clip

In the room with the large glowing mushrooms, river and bridge, the player should go across the bridge to the right, then up until they come across an exit, a stump and a long wall to the right. They should then walk into the corner near the stump, then go up slightly and right for about half a second. Now, the player must go back down and into the corner, and Mario should be inside the wall. The player can then use Trio Grab to get everyone out of bounds, or just walk up and down until they clip through.[15]

Out of bounds before King Boo

In the right room before King Boo, there is an area with a glowing Mushroom and a ? Block above it. If the trio walks towards the nearby wall (which leads north into the boss room exit) and carefully moves left a few times, up slightly, left slightly, then down and left again, they can clip through the wall and out of bounds. This glitch has no use in normal gameplay.[16]

Play as Paper Mario

Warning! Performing this action may corrupt your game's save file.

The "Play as Solo Paper Mario" glitch in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
The glitch in action

By moving down and left into the wall in the Sunbeam Plains Paper Mario-only area at the right angle, the player can clip Paper Mario into the wall and out of bounds. The camera will remain fixed on the area, as the game assumes that they are still inside it.[17] However, if he then talks to a nearby Toad without entering a building, the camera will snap to the Toad's position, remaining fixed. By walking around and talking to Toads, Paper Mario can have the camera snap between several preset locations.[18] If he walks back to the main map, he will then be able to wander off his own.[19]

If the player performs the glitch during the Paper Toad Hide-and-Seek mission and talks to the Paper Toad on the sign in front of the item shop, Mario and Luigi will run towards Paper Mario and the cutscene will progress as normal, but they will then stand still and not follow him afterwards. If the player walks back to the hole in the fence, then enters and exits again, Paper Mario, Mario, Luigi will attempt to run towards each other, but the game will not be able to handle their movement, causing the group to run around and even teleport once or twice in the process.[20]

In the same mission, if the player enters the Item Shop, stepping on the Paper Toad on the floor in the said shop will crash the game to the HOME Menu. This is because the game only has animations for the full party stepping on the Paper Toad in the shop.[21] The game will crash after it tries to restart itself, where the player needs to forcefully exit the game via the HOME menu button.

In this state, he can fight enemies, use/collect items, buy most items, and access various areas via Warp Pipes, but cannot progress through cutscenes or use Trio abilities. If the player talks to the Toad who sells ? cards, after buying one, the game will softlock, as Mario is not present to say "Oh yeah!"

If the player fights one or more normal Shy Guys without any Paper Shy Guys present, then the game will freeze when they start their rock-throwing attacks. If at least one Paper Shy Guy is present, then they will never use this attack, presumably to prevent the glitch from occurring.

If the player purchases Lakitea at the Lakitu Info Center's arcade, the camera will aim out of bounds. This can be fixed after the player presses A on the "All HP and BP restored!" message. This also occurs if Luigi is alone.

Note that certain parts of the game cannot be accessed or escaped by Paper Mario alone. As such, the player should not save the game while in these areas, since it will softlock the save file.

If the player attempts to walk on slippery ice, the game will crash to the Home Menu.[22] This will likely also happen if Luigi is by himself, as the game only has animations for the full party sliding across the ice.

If the player opens the Lakitu Info Center missions list and then exits, Mario and Luigi will reappear with him. However, Mario will be trapped behind the counter, and attempting to get him out will cause the screen to shake violently.[23] This does not occur by pressing B Button when selecting a mission in the east Sunbeam Plains Lakitu Info Center. This glitch can be fixed by using Trio Glider.

If the player reads the sign near the Mystery of Mount Brrr mission, the camera will pan away until Paper Mario is off-screen, and will remain in this state until they enter a door or passageway.[24] Presumably, it is trying to move to Mario's location, but becomes confused as he is not in the area.

If Paper Mario enters another gap where only he can enter and attempts to exit, the group will warp to the last place the player saved the game, though only Mario and Luigi will be at the place. Without moving, it is possible to use trio attacks without Paper Mario, and even dash by pressing and holding X Button. Using Trio Hammer will softlock the game, using Trio Glider will not let them fly (though Mario and Luigi will still perform their jumping animation), and using Trio Grab will glitch Mario's sprite all over the screen, but will be in normal Trio Grab form afterwards. However, the trio is unable to enter a loading zone, and canceling will softlock the game.

In this state, they can walk through walls and obstacles, and even enter a battle, until they enter a pipe, begin a cutscene or send Paper Mario through another crack. This glitch can be used to skip the If the group enters a Paper Mario-only area and has Paper Mario enter the crack into the area, they will be softlocked, forcing the player to restart the game.

In this state, the group will stay at the same height level. They can use Trio Glider and cancel over a different height platform, like at the top of a slope. If the trio uses their glider form, they will rise into the air and can stand on thin air. They can go back on the ground again by reusing the move over a platform. If they use Trio Hammer, then Paper Mario can get stuck in the air behind Mario and Luigi, which will prevent them from performing any more Trio abilities until they leave the area. The group can walk through quicksand slopes with this and can use Trio Glider once under this slope to get to the bottom again. If the game is saved in this form, the effect will continue when the file is reloaded.

Collisionless spike panel

There is a part near the top of Mount Brrr where the group has to flip over two spike-covered panels to reach a Trio Glider segment. If Paper Mario comes here by himself, he can walk over the first panel as if it was not there, though the second one will hurt him as normal.

Floating Monty Moles

In the room where the group fights Petey Piranha in Sunbeam Plains, there is a river and some land on the other side where Monty Moles appear later in the game. If the player returns here as Paper Mario only, these moles can sometimes appear in midair, or above the river in the center of the screen. In rare cases, they can also appear on the wrong side of the river, allowing Paper Mario to fight them without crossing the river.

Mount Brrr Yoshi camera pan

If the player talks to Yoshi after defeating him in a race, the camera will pan in a random direction after his dialogue is finished. This can be fixed by moving Circle Pad in the opposite direction the camera panned.

Trio Grab skip

By using a certain sequence of out of bounds glitches and tricks, it is possible to reach the King Bob-omb Battle without ever getting Trio Grab or visiting Twinsy Tropics.[25]

To perform the glitch, the player will need to use Paper Mario wrong warping to disable collision detection, exit a cutscene to get super speed, go to Gloomy Woods, and go all the way through to the right side until they reach Mount Brrr (Flutter can still be talked to while invisible), then learn Trio Drill. The player should then use it on a dirt patch pointing down to clip through the floor, and walk over to the top entrance to the right side of Gloomy Woods.

Here, the player should clip through a gate that is usually lowered by hitting an ! Switch, hit the switch to make the game think they have defeated King Boo, and then perform the Playing Luigi glitch. By walking back to the Gloomy Woods Toad Village and playing a minigame to get Mario and Paper Mario back, the player can then proceed as normal.

Sunbeam Plains clip

In the area of Sunbeam Plains with various cracks and the area across the river to the right leading to a Lakitu Info Center, there is a ledge at the top-right that the group can fly over with Trio Glider. By then walking up to the wall to the right until they stop, pushing towards it a few times, then going up and back, they can clip through the wall and out of bounds.[26]

Stuck Papercraft Bowser

If Papercraft Bowser is knocked over too close to the edge of his arena, his body can get stuck in the wall. This makes him unable to move or be picked up by his followers, allowing the group to attack him without the possibility of taking damage.[27]

Toad storage

Warning! Performing this action may corrupt your game's save file.

Toad Storage in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. The player actually performed the Tropical Paper Toad Hunt version of the glitch. The following picture shows the trio doing a slide after dashing in the Arcade, which is normally possible only in certain Paper Toad missions.
The glitch in action

If the player leaves the area of a mission, the game will assume them to still be in the mission, resulting in several effects:

  • The "Save" button is replaced by the "Exit Mission" button, which acts as a teleport to the Lakitu Info Center where they started the mission and ends the glitch. However, the player's status cannot permanently change if they exit the mission. Because of this, exiting will cause them to lose any items or Bros. Attacks gained during the mission. As these items do not respawn, they will permanently disappear from the game.
  • Some missions like Tropical Paper Toad Hunt allow mission-exclusive moves like sliding. Performing the glitch in these missions disables some Trio Moves, like Trio Glider and Drill, if they are all unlocked. Completing them after autosaving at the arcade and then restarting the game ends the glitch.
  • Attempting to start a new mission or minigame other than arcade games and the Battle Ring will freeze the game.
    • Playing an arcade game, auto-saving the game, and restarting will cause certain objects to be permanently saved to the map, which can create normally impassable barriers.[28]
  • If the player is defeated in a boss battle or mandatory fight, the game will consider them to have won regardless, though they will not gain any rewards. The game will also turn completely blue except for characters and blocks, though this can be fixed by traveling to another area. This also occurs if the player exits a battle.[29] Being defeated in a normal battle will reset it with the characters each having 1 HP instead.
    • Defeating the final boss resets the game to the Lakitu Info Center after the ending, with the characters off-screen. They can escape by centering the viewpoint and moving until they fall into the Lakitu Info Center. However, it will cause the platform leading to Bowser to despawn, and if they return to Neo Bowser Castle, the game will freeze.[30]
      • Sometimes, they can fall into the staff-only area of the Lakitu Info Center, forcing the player to restart from their last save point.
    • Defeating Shiny RoboBowser after performing the glitch in a timed mission will turn Starlow into a line of graphics in the top right of the screen during Bowser's defeat animation.[31][dead link]
  • Sometimes, if the player activates important events or cutscenes, several objects will have their collisions disabled, while returning to the area will freeze the game.
  • During a timed mission, if the player opens and closes the menu, attempts to buy or sell anything in a shop, or wins or flees a normal battle, the game will freeze.[32]

Twinsy Tropics clips

Deserted dungeon glitch

During the "Get the Medallion" mission, in the final room of Twinsy Tropics Dungeon, the player should run against a corner, alternating left and right in the process, which will eventually result in Mario being clipped out-of-bounds. They can either repeat the same process for Luigi and Paper Mario or use Trio Grab to get everyone out-of-bounds. If they then exit through the path to the Bowser door, the area is completely deserted, and at least one platform is invisible, but still has collision. The map also shows the player as being off-screen and the exit pipe does not function.[33]

Collisionless dungeon wall

In the Twinsy Tropics Dungeon, the metal wall in the first conveyor belt room (where the player first sees Roy Koopa talk to some Toads) can lose its collision. If this occurs, the player can have the group walk through it and along the conveyor belt where the ore was being sent.[34]

Rock clip

In the area of Twinsy Tropics leading to the dungeon, there is an area with Koopas, two ledges and a rock by itself that connects them. If the group walks into this rock from the left side, they can clip inside it and out-of-bounds.[35]

Twinsy Tropics coast clip

The Twinsy Tropics Out of Bounds glitch in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
The glitch in action

In Twinsy Tropics, if the characters stand on the edge of the coast south of the bridge to Bowser's Castle, use Trio Grab, and start walking along the edge, they will start vibrating before falling into the water. At this point, if they head to the nearby bridge, they will teleport onto it.[36]

By performing the glitch to exit a Toad mission in Twinsy Tropics, the player can skip the battle with the Chargin' Chuck Corps, though they will appear in the Battle Ring regardless.

Additionally, on their first visit to Twinsy Tropics, if the characters walk too far off the bottom of the screen, the game will freeze.

Paper Toad in a bubble freeze
"Paper Toad in a Bubble Crash" glitch attempted in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
The Paper Toad is carried with Trio Grab to the bridge. Triggering Toad storage with the Paper Toad causes the crash

If the player attempts to grab the Paper Toad in a bubble with Trio Grab while out of bounds during the Tropical Paper Toad Hunt mission, they can carry as if they were a Bomb Bud. If they then carry to the bridge and attempt Toad storage, the game will crash to the HOME menu.[37]

If the player instead throws the Toad, the Toad will be replaced by an empty bubble that cannot be grabbed. This makes the mission unwinnable, as this Toad is also mandatory, forcing the player to restart the mission to try again.

Scripting

NOTE: These glitches abuse interactions that cause objects or displayed information to perform unintended behaviors.

Fast forward storage

By exiting the Mount Brrr tunnel and activating the "not enough Toads" cutscene from the wrong side, then quickly going back into the tunnel, it is possible to "store" the fast forward effect from cutscenes. This can be used to perform some glitches.[38]

  • By using Trio Glider, the group can fly much faster and higher, allowing the player to access otherwise inaccessible areas.[39]
  • By using Trio Drill while facing down near the bottom of a dirt wall, the group will clip through the floor and can travel anywhere they like in the area.[40]
  • In Doop Doop Dunes, there are various patches of quicksand that cause the group to slide down if they try running or jumping up them. Normally, these are impassable, since the trio cannot jump quickly enough to outpace the quicksand's effects. However, if fast forward storage is active, they can hold R Button to speed up the game, and then repeatedly jump to climb up the quicksand-covered slopes. This lets Paper Mario reach the area with the Papercraft Kamek battle on his own, since he cannot use Trio Hammer to break the nearby blocks.[41]

Sequence breaks

NOTE: These glitches allow the player to access areas through unintended methods.

Doop Doop Dunes skips

Doop Doop Dunes beach clip

In the beach area of Doop Doop Dunes, there is a rock near the left entrance. By going to the wall just left of the rock, and then moving up, left, and up again repeatedly, the group can be clipped inside the wall and out of bounds. From here they can either reach Twinsy Tropics early from Doop Doop Dunes or skip the Chargin' Chuck Corps boss later in the game.[42]

Nabbit skip

In the second area of Doop Doop Dunes (the room with a Lakitu Info Center on top of a high cliff and a path leading to Mount Brrr), there is a small area with a fence and a path leading right that the group has to follow. If they carefully line up near the left wall in this area, then go up and left, they can clip through the wall and out of bounds, skipping the Nabbit chase sequence and the first Spiny battle.[43] This can also be performed with Trio Grab.

Pokey boss skip

In the far top-left corner of the area with the bridge and Pokey bosses, there is a ledge with an unusual rock formation to the right. By moving Mario into the rocks and changing between holding up-left and up-right on Circle Pad, the player can force the group into the rocks and out through the wall behind. At this point, they can walk off-screen past the Pokeys to avoid battling them or crossing the nearby bridge.[44]

There is another way to skip the Pokey bosses. Near the top of the quicksand slope near Big Pokey and Tower Power Pokey in Doop Doop Dunes, there is a set of brown rocks near a block breakable with Trio Hammer. By positioning the group near the right side and moving around carefully, the player can force them through the rock and out of bounds.[45] Talking to the Lakitu at the counter in the Info Center will prompt him to say to go to Doop Doop Dunes, despite the player already being there. To return the game to normal, the player should enter the pipe and go back through in the grotto.

A third way occurs in the area where the group learns Trio Hammer. After breaking the first block, there is a small rock next to some paper terrain. By nudging Mario into the space between them, walking around the rock and back, jumping on the platform, walking up to get inside the rock, and repeating for each other character, the group can go out of bounds. This can be used to skip the Pokey bosses and allows them to enter the Toad village early, with the same consequences as the previous method. This is easier by using Trio Grab once in the rock if not used for speedrun purposes.

Gloomy Woods skips

Berries and Yoshi Race skip

In Gloomy Woods, on the left of the first area where the berries and trees are, the group can stand on the edge of a stump and use Trio Grab to walk on the bottomless pit next to it. By heading north to the next area, they can skip collecting the berries or racing Yoshi.[46]

Bomb Derby skip

In Gloomy Woods, if the player carefully walks towards the bottom right of the bridge in the room where they normally learn the Bomb Derby attack, they will go out of bounds. By going around the area off-screen, the player can skip the cutscene with Nabbit that gives them the Bomb Derby attack.[47]

The player can also land on the tiny island with a Bomb Bud, where they cannot escape without restarting the game. If the group uses Trio Drill, they can dig on the island, but cannot exit the ground afterwards. If the game is saved at this point, the file will be softlocked.[48]

The player can also skip learning Bomb Derby by going past the first Ninji in the same room, then walking into the left wall when it opens up to a clip out-of-bounds. This is simplest with Paper Mario on his own, but can be performed with any character.[49]

Gloomy Woods clip in plane and boxes area

In Gloomy Woods, there is an area with a Trio Glider section with moving spike traps, as well as a stack of cardboard boxes with a ? Block on top. By using Trio Grab here, then going to a certain corner and alternating between +Control Pad left and +Control Pad up, the group can get out of bounds while in Trio Drill.[50] They can then come out of the ground as normal and walk over to various areas.

Gloomy Woods entrance skip

Warning! Performing this action may corrupt your game's save file.

By running and jumping at the rocks near the Paper Mario-only area next to the Gloomy Woods entrance, it is possible for the player to force the group through the wall and into the forest much earlier than normal. This has several side effects:

  • They cannot use Trio Grab, preventing them from progressing past the first two areas in Gloomy Woods. However, there is a clip the player can perform on the hill on the right of the Paper Mario-only area to exit the area.[51]
  • Despite not having a set, they can still buy Battle Cards, which will give them a set regardless.[52]
  • After talking to Wiggler, the game thinks they are on the road to Mount Brrr and updates the quest status to reflect this.

They can also walk into the Paper Mario-only area of Sunbeam Plains, at which point they will be trapped. Saving here, or in Gloomy Woods without Trio Grab, will softlock the save file.

The player can also access the left side of Gloomy Woods with a different method. To the right of the same area, there are a few ledges the group can climb, leading to a small hollow in the back wall. If they go towards the seam in this wall, push +Control Pad up a few times, go left, holding +Control Pad up slightly, and return to where they started, they can clip through the wall and out of bounds. From here, they can walk around to the left entrance of Gloomy Woods, allowing them to skip much of the game.[53]

The Mario Bros. can also get into the left side of Gloomy Woods early in the game, but if Paper Mario is not in the party, when the cutscene starts, the game softlocks. This can also be done by Paper Mario on his own to reach Peach's Castle and the otherwise inaccessible parts of Sunbeam Plains.

If the player enters the Toad village from the bottom while the papercraft objects are present and walks into the right corner of the papercraft platform blocking the entrance (ideally while in Trio Grab form), the group will clip through it and out of bounds.[54]

North Gloomy Woods clip

In the north part of Gloomy Woods, near Flutter and the Warp Pipe, there are some rocks to the right of the screen. By carefully moving Mario towards the right corner of the leftmost one, repeatedly pressing +Control Pad up and moving around, Mario can be clipped inside the rock. If the game is in the middle of the Fly Guy Flyby mission or the player does not have Trio Grab, they can move around until Luigi is clipped into the rock. At this point, they will be temporarily separated from Paper Mario and, if done correctly, can walk over to the loading zone on the right.[55] If they do have Trio Grab, they can use it to get everyone out of bounds. This glitch allows the player to enter a small area far earlier than they are supposed to and escape a mission in progress.

Playing as Luigi

First, the player should walk to the rock near the recovery block in Sunbeam Plains, near the leftmost entrance of Gloomy Woods. They should then walk up-right and up-left until they can clip into it, then use Trio Grab to go inside and out of bounds, allowing the player to enter the leftmost part of Gloomy Woods early.

Now inside the area, the player should go up and carefully move around the log. They will eventually end up inside the log, partially out of bounds. By following it around, the player will end up with only Luigi. To get the group back, the player should keep going until they reach the Toad village, then play a minigame.[56]

If the player heads to the Lakitu Info Center instead, they can run around and play the game as Luigi only.[57] In this state, he can buy items and battle enemies, but cannot access Warp Pipes or use Trio moves.

Mount Brrr skips

Mount Brrr out of bounds

By walking into the seam next to the platforms leading to the tunnel out of the village to the summit in Trio Grab form, the group can walk through the wall and onto the void. This allows them enter the tunnel early and walk over the surrounding mountainside and sky without limitations.[58]

Mount Brrr shortcut

In the uppermost area of Mount Brrr, there is a cloud with a Biddybud and bridges to the north and right. By using the Trio Drill here and charging at the edge of the rightmost bridge, the group will be launched into the air and dig through the sky above. If they move left or down, they will land on the bridge while underground, letting them dig inside the bridge. By moving right and up, however, they can walk across the air to the other clouds, potentially skipping part of the area.[59]

Mount Brrr tunnel skip

Before the paper terrain appears to the left of the Toad village on Mount Brrr, the player can have the group use the Trio Drill to dig in the area southwest of the Lakitu Info Center. They will be closer to the wall than usual, where jumping out the ground and using Trio Grab in the right location will let them walk through the nearby fence and into the sky. This can act as a shortcut to either the pipe behind the Lakitu Info Center or the tunnel leading to the upper part of the summit.[60]

Reach Mount Brrr summit without Trio Glider

By using Trio Drill on the vertical dirt walls in the passage leading to the summit, then dropping down near the wall, the player can clip inside it. At this point, using Trio Grab will let the trio teleport to the higher edge or high in the air. They can use this to exit the tunnel without using Trio Glider.[61]

Peach's Castle skip

At the beginning of the game, if the player heads towards the right-center post of Peach's Castle and moves at an angle while moving back and forth carefully, they will eventually clip into it. If the group heads down, they will eventually land on the water below. The bottom screen map can be used to navigate around to the front exit of the castle to skip Toadette and the Toad guards.[62]

If the player returns to the castle, the Toads scene will be activated, but the group will be able to move in this state, despite them moving faster than due to fast-forward storage. The storage will be removed when Lakitu interrupts the group.

Trio Racquet and Petey Piranha skip

In the area of Sunbeam Plains with the island and Lakitu Info Center, the player must go up towards the north exit and stand near the flowers to the left. From here, they should keep pushing right to get Mario and Luigi closer together, then tap +Control Pad up and +Control Pad left until they end up partially in the wall. Now, the player should go up-left and down-left until they clip through, then walk to the Lakitu Info Center from the rightmost loading point. The player can then talk to a Lakitu to get Paper Mario and walk right to skip much of Sunbeam Plains.

To get back to the main area, the player should keep walking until they get to the screen where they would normally encounter Petey Piranha on the other side of the lake, then go towards the wall to the lower left. The player should then press +Control Pad left, +Control Pad up, and +Control Pad down until they clip into the wall, then walk back around to get to the exit leading to the Papercraft Goomba area and Toad village.[63]

Twinsy Tropics skips

Paper Boat skip

By walking right from the Lakitu Info Center, the player can find some rocks near a section of the beach and a ledge. By walking into these carefully with Trio Grab, and then pressing Y Button and moving Circle Pad around, the trio can clip through the obstacle and onto the ocean nearby. This lets them avoid having to use Trio Drill or Trio Glider to get past the nearby paper terrain, and can be used with another out of bounds glitch in the Doop Doop Dunes beach area to avoid having to use the boat altogether.[64]

With the glitch performed, Paper Petey Piranha will never spawn outside Gloomy Woods. However, he will appear in the Boss Battle Ring regardless of this, since the game expects the player to have defeated him before the arcade is accessible.

If the player exits Twinsy Tropics without the boat and then enters a Lakitu Info Center, they can play the Toad missions from Twinsy Tropics. Completing these displays a message in Japanese that there are no more Paper Toads in the current area, regardless of what region the game is set to.[65][dead link] This can also happen with the Gloomy Woods entrance skip if the player completes all Toad missions in its Lakitu Info Center.

Rings skip

In Twinsy Tropics, there are two rooms with ring puzzles just before the cave leading to Bowser's Castle. In the southmost one, the player should go to the left until they see two gray rocks by the wall. Now, by moving up and down carefully, they should be able to clip through. From here, the player can wander around until they come across the area with the giant seashell switch, and the trio should be automatically warped next to it. They can then hit the switch and skip using Trio Drill.[66]

Twinsy Tropics barrier skip

In the room with the Bowser barrier in Twinsy Tropics, the player must walk to the south wall. Now, near the middle, they should move along until they stop in place, then move around slightly. The player should then clip through, where they can get the entire group out of bounds, then walk down awhile and then right. The player should be able to walk to the pipe that exits near the barrier and three laser statues, skipping Gloomy Woods and Mount Brrr.[67]

The glitch can also be used to go out of bounds near the remains of Bowser's Castle once Neo Bowser Castle appears, but if performed, they will be stuck on a tiny platform in the middle of the lava, requiring them to restart from their last save point.

Twinsy Tropics dungeon clips

Warning! Performing this action may corrupt your game's save file.

In the room with a gap and a folded-up bridge (between two corridors of jail cells), the player must walk into the corner and use Trio Grab. If performed correctly, the group will walk off the edge and can skip to the door on the opposite side, allowing them to avoid receiving Battle Cards from the Goomba in the dungeon and skips two cutscenes.[68]

Wendy and Roy skip

In the first room of the Twinsy Tropics Dungeon, the player should move to the upper right of the torch nearest the pipe, then make their way along the edge until Mario clips inside, before using Trio Grab to clip the rest of the group inside. The player can then walk north off the ledge into the water and then warp to the ground next to the exit pipe, skipping the battle with Roy and Wendy.[69]

If performed before obtaining Trio Grab, they will be unable to exit the dungeon, requiring the player to restart from their last save point.

Wrong Trio Attack order

Warning! Performing this action may corrupt your game's save file.

If the player uses glitches to avoid playing Lakitu missions in Sunbeam Plains, Doop Doop Dunes, Twinsy Tropics or Mount Brrr, returning later allows them to complete the missions in these locations in any order, as it is completing all missions in an area that gives them a Trio Attack, not the number of Toads rescued. For example, if the player returns to Mount Brrr and completes all initial Toad missions in the location, they will get Trio Shuriken without having Trio Kite or Trio Whirligig.

If the player completes the last three missions, the player will get Trio Meteor. However, completing these missions causes the game to believe that they have saved all the Paper Toads, preventing the player from unlocking new missions, and, in turn, any Trio Attacks that are unlocked by completing these missions. This can also make accessing Mount Brrr's summit more difficult if they have not completed all missions, as Starlow does not believe they have saved all Toads and thus does not let them enter the tunnel.

Skipping missions in an area can also disorganize the list. If this is performed, and then a Hard mode version of a mission is selected while the mission is occupying the wrong slot in the menu, the game will crash.[70] This is likely due to the game thinking the player is playing the mission in the original slot and looks for a non-existent hard mode version to overwrite.
