Galaxy and names

Hey, I'm sorry. The comments I made on Super Mario Galaxy's page were rude and potentially provocative. That was not intentional, and I apologize.

To clarify my position, I do not think internal file designations should be recognized as true names. They serve utilitarian purposes for the developers and were likely created before enemy designs were even finalized. Whether they are in plain English is less important than the fact that they are not legitimately published names. It's fine if there is literally no other names to reference, but I think it would be more accurate to prioritize Romanized Japanese names over internal file designations. For example, I think it would be more accurate to refer to the small skeletal sharks in Galaxy as "Kobone" in place of "Skeletal Fish Guard". The first is the romanization of a legitimate name for the enemy. The second is not a name at all. But that's just my opinion. - Nintendo101 (talk) 08:17, February 24, 2021 (EST)

More filename requests

Hi, I have a few more filename requests for you, this time for objects primarily from Yoshi's Woolly World:

  • The bead jars that, when hit repeatedly, give Yoshi many beads. They always release a Stamp Patch whenever they are hit for the final time.
  • The accordion walls. More details on the article in question, though it's also worth noting that they return in Crafted World.
  • The cannon-like bobbins that launch Yoshi a fixed distance (see the giant Baby Bowser boss fight as an example). While there ARE "World Bobbins" on the world map that technically function the same way, as described on page 11 of the game's digital manual, that name feels a bit too specific.

Thanks in advance! Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 18:54, March 8, 2021 (EST)

I do not believe so. I don't recall it being given an official name on the English website either. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 09:28, May 9, 2021 (EDT)

Silver Chomp (and etc)

Hi, I'm curious about Silver Chomp's JP name due to this edit. The one it was changed to was from a mission title, is the former one from a guide? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:13, March 20, 2021 (EDT)

Related, what do English guides say about Fiery Dino Piranha? I'm just curious if the mission title isn't more like "fiery Dino Piranha" and this is a "golden Chomp" situation. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:18, May 13, 2021 (EDT)

DKTF Shogakukan guide

How did you get your hands on it, out of curiosity? It's such an elusive piece of media that I've only seen it being sold second-hand on eBay. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 12:55, April 25, 2021 (EDT)

Same. I bought online in bulk along with several other hard-to-find things of interest (not all Mario-related), which saves some money over individual sales. LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:12, April 27, 2021 (EDT)
Hey. I was wondering if you could find a proper name for the little owl enemies that Skowl employs in his battle in Mountaintop Tussle (the game’s second world). The Prima guide refers to them as Hootzes, though they have their own behaviour as well as a slightly distinct appearance. Would you mind checking the enemy list and the level’s walkthrough in the Japanese guide for this? Thank you. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 20:19, May 2, 2021 (EDT)
Thank you for your response; I’ll probably get around to creating new articles one of these days. In regard to feathered and unfeathered Stilts, the Returns Shogakukan guide seems to treat them as separate variations as per the Koopa Troopa / Paratroopa approach, where one is essentially an extra hit point of the other while both being encountered as enemies on their own. I’d support a split myself, honestly, and so I would for Skittlers, Tiki Torch, and the others you’ve mentioned since Frogoon and Hopgoon are already separate articles. In this case, though, would the American guide, which groups these minor variations under one name, be more of an authority than its Japanese counterpart, since the game was developed in the US? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 19:48, May 3, 2021 (EDT)

Re: "Gance"

There's one string like that in the Japanese version's global.txt file. I wonder if it still exists in the international versions, but you can try to search for it. If it doesn't exist in the international version's script and you think it's not a proper edit, then it's okay if you just simply delete the notes there.

Paper Unbaba and friends

Hey, would you support the idea of a direct relation between Blargg and the Hooktail family due to the punning names (and considering the PM games usually tend to pun names off species) and Hooktail's own slight resemblance to the original Blargg, or would you consider that a fool's errand? Re: Above and other things

I'd say source the guide for the Chomps then, will attempt Gobblegut, Hisstocrat, and possibly Dino Piranha merge proposal(s) when the time seems right. As for old cacmummy, I think given they gave Poison Pokey a different name for all languages instead of just the incredibly dodgy English localization, that it's more safe to consider them a functionally equivalent successor rather than the same thing (and honestly, given the "abandoned" theme of their locale in TTYD, "Pokey Mummy" could have still worked if they wanted to use it). Anyways, I think Pale Piranha and SPM Moon Cleft should be dealt with first before attempting any other PM enemy reclassifying. Any plans on moving forward with re-re-merging Pale Piranha any time quickly? If not, it's one of the next things on my list. Moon Cleft should definitely wait until after it. As for Black Shy Guy, part of me wants to move forward with phase 3 and attempt to have generic appearances like the baseball games and MK8 removed, and another part thinks that it'd be best to try and redo the previous one when the time is right with the question of "why is PM Anti Guy more different from CS Black Shy Guy than MTA black Shy Guy is from CS Black Shy Guy" that I regrettably forgot to bring up until the end of this last one. After all, it was merely a stalemate with a fairly even outcome, not a full loss with overwhelming opposition. (Maybe some day we can finally have "Chestnut King" merged to how it was clearly intended to "Luigi has a dramatic end fight against the previous game's tutorial boss.") On the subject of odd TTYD things, I did notice Dark Craw has an incredibly generic JP name that seems like it may be intended to umbrella over the so-called "Craws" in general, but is a bit conflicting with how there seems to be some implication that the NPC species may just be "Gus" like the character. Thoughts on that? Finally, on "Ghost Stream," I think simply adding it to Caged Ghost is perfectly fine then considering Jelly Ghost (in the same stages) had what amounts to a functional replacement to its role (even if it's really more similar to Stretch). On another note, I'm strongly considering reformatting Naval Piranha in the same manner as Dino Piranha (and on a note related to that, given Smilax's generic JP name, I'm wondering if any JP materials ever referred to "Naval Buds" through the same generic term, as I think they may be intended to be the same thing). Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:46, May 25, 2021 (EDT)

I'd prefer a parent/derived for the Fuzzipokeys, myself, and I suppose Big Blooper needs imminent work too. Are you confident enough people would play ball in a new Metal Mario proposal? And do you have any thoughts for what to do going forward with Black Shy Guy? (Also I don't think I'd noticed the situation with Merlar and Merlumina until now.) Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:52, May 25, 2021 (EDT)

Fire Bubble: Resurgence

So I've been thinking perhaps it'd be best to merge the SMG blue Lava Bubble to the normal Lava Bubble and treat it as an abnormal design that would then coexist with the normal design (the same should probably be done for Zigzag Lava Bubble). The reason is since the names provided in official materials state it to just be Lava Bubble, while "Fire Bubble" is probably a case like "Yōgan Bubble" where they just wanted a quick identifier to differentiate this entity normally called "Bubble" from something else (in this case, normal bubbles like the item-container/breathable/rideable ones). Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:49, May 29, 2021 (EDT)

Good to know you're still around; I've been quite busy on here as of late (also I got a job). Anyways I got a Pale Piranha proposal going, so please don't hesitate to look into that. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:54, August 24, 2021 (EDT)

Rotating Lift

Hey, I've added the source back in for the Rotating Lift in Super Mario World that's from the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia. I do think that it's not a good source (hence why I added a "better source" tag next to it), but I'm not exactly sure how to go about mentioning it because that's the only source for the name we have. If we must not use it altogether, what alternatives we do have to acknowledge it? Make up a conjecture name for it? Leave it unnamed? BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 20:31, June 12, 2021 (EDT)

Yoshi's Island GBA guide

Now, i know that the Japanese version doesn't give them a separate entry, but does the English guide follow the same rule as the original SNES's one? Or are they just considered to be normal Crazee Dayzee? I've reopened the discussion, debating on wether it should be merged with Crazee Dayzee, or not. Since the Block Slime's name was not given until the Advance guide, i think it's likely to have change from the SNES one. More specifically, the English name. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 13:51, July 25, 2021 (EDT)

Tweester

It has come to my attention that Tweester, at least in regards to the Mario Party orb, actually shares the fairly distinct Gusty's JP name. This makes me think that perhaps the SMG entity was a deliberate rename to avoid confusion that happened to coincide with a redesign, or alternatively that maybe the orb's name was a fluke and perhaps it had used that name sooner. I'd need more evidence before doing anything with this, but what do you think? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:50, September 26, 2021 (EDT)

I was more thinking how some of the orbs have had odd names in English (like Magikoopa Capsule). Thanks! I also would still like some input on some of the subjects I linked above. Also, I'm curious as to your thoughts on my latest major boat-rocker idea. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:23, September 27, 2021 (EDT)

The Japanese text of Mario & Sonic’s Mii dialogues on the names of Yoshi and Toad

I managed to retrieve the Japanese text of the Mii dialogues about Yoshi's and Toad's names in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games:

I personally think that they indeed wanted to tell us how Nintendo was handling these names also in relation to differently colored members, who can still be named with the name of the species, as the case of Toad in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and, more recently, of Penguin Toad and Yoshi (Kangaroo) in Mario Kart Tour showed. I'd like to know your opinion on the matter though. You can reply here, by the way, to keep the discussion easier to read.--Mister Wu (talk) 09:48, October 7, 2021 (EDT)

I believe it. I think I shared this story somewhere here before, but a long time ago (possibly before I joined the wiki), Nintendo of Europe or Australia had a certain Mario website. I believe it might've had a remote and television as its main menu navigation. Anyway, one of the fun facts it had said a very similar thing about Yoshi as the eventual 2016 game. At the time, I just thought the writer was mistaken and so I didn't listen to this rare info, but knowing what I know now in retrospect, I wish I called attention to it back then. Many such sites didn't last very long as they ran on Flash and don't have fully functioning backups today, which I'm almost certain must've been the fate of this site. It could've saved a few headaches in the long run if more people were made aware of it back then. LinkTheLefty (talk) 21:25, October 19, 2021 (EDT)
Also, I want to add that I'm pretty sure, implicitly, this applies to Toads and Yoshis of standard design (eg. palette swaps); whenever they have nonstandard base designs (Toadette, Boshi, etc.), they tend to be allowed unique names, though these characters are increasingly uncommon. Dancing Spear Guy translations

Hi there!

I don't know if you're still active here, but I just wanted to ask if you were responsible for adding the German name on the page Dancing Spear Guy. I'm desperate for the citation, but I can't find anything, I've even searched for all the possible (legit) manuals of the Yoshi's Island games, and I still couldn't find anything.

Thanks for your help!

NMS UK/Aus names

Hi, not too long ago I looked through Nintendo Magazine System (UK and AUS) issues on Internet Archive, as well as some strategy guides to try and find names for the three Super Mario Bros. games and Super Mario World. My deep dive led to the creation of a few articles such as Light Barrel and 1-Up Chambers. NMS is so lazy and casual with names, you should see the DK Coin page! Results May Vary (talk) 10:49, October 18, 2021 (EDT)

Very interesting! I did not know about the Killer Instinct info. I do find it surprising how little NMS is documented in comparison to Nintendo Power, especially if it's official. I know for a fact that in one issue with Link's Awakening review, Pieces of Power are said to be fragments of the Triforce, which doesn't even appear in the game! Monty Mole species guidebook info

Hi, mind making a list of descriptions for Monty Mole species of guidebooks you own? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 13:08, November 8, 2021 (EST)

If you want some better access to the guidebook scans I sent, I will just send them here to to help out:

I also have links to some scans here: [1] [2] [3]

There are guidebook scans on random hoo haas here: http://randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com/ai/scans/guide.html. You can find interesting Monty Mole species stuff there, just find games that have Monty Mole species (this includes Ragumo and Rocky Wrench to). Also what was that text that was said under a picture of Monty Mole taken in a realistic location seen in the Super Mario World Shogakukan Guide (it was in the Valley of Bowser 1 section).

Finally, I uploaded scans of several Japanese guidebooks and manga on the Mario Boards here: https://www.marioboards.com/threads/44397/. So far it is the Origami King and Yoshi’s Woolly World guidebooks but more will come soon once I scan more.

Also remember to put the descriptions on my page both English and Japanese. Thanks for the help. (also this is a response to his reply so this is not about any excessive requests). MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 00:29, November 30, 2021 (EST)

TCRF Bullet Bill

I dunno, I also recently saw on there on one of the "stages" pages normal Bills chomped too at that point in development. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:51, November 12, 2021 (EST)

I'd noticed the potential name connection, but it still seems like a bit of a stretch without further evidence in my opinion. On the subject of Lava Lotus, I had noticed it closely resembles Panser's design both in art and sprite (albeit larger and transparent) while Ponki coming back at the same time as Pokey, Ninji, Pidgit, and some Spark expies (while still being a fire spitting bloom) hardly seems like a coincidence. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:08, November 14, 2021 (EST)
Saying "an aboveground version" does not technically make it a derivative if it predated that; my though on that is that they just wanted to compare with the relative already used in a JP-released Mario game, a la if one compares Shellcreeper to Koopa Troopa, especially when retrofitted with design bits from the latter. Super Mario Bros. Daizukan

i noticed your recent edits, while they are correct I want to provide an explanation for the original name: while the Japanese name is indeed Super Mario Daizukan, the book also has a logo with words written in Romaji: Super Mario Bros. Strollin' Stu and Kug

Actually, if you watch Sunshine's original reveal trailer, you can see Strollin' Stus far closer to typical Goombas in design being spawned by the HinoKuri2 (which naming-wise sounds connected to Smolderin' Stu, but I digress); in the test level, it still spawns normal Strollin' Stus, but with the final design. This suggests to me that "Kug" is just a graphic of them from earlier in development, likely with a similar intent to the Strollin' Stu generators in the Beach Cannon's Secret {Ku(ri )g(enerator)?}. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 12:38, November 28, 2021 (EST)

You unfortunately can't recruit Beanbean natives (other than Peasley, who's a bonus). The enemy-only Goombas, Beanies, and Pestnuts are not listed next to each other in the enemy list, but the same can be said of Ice Snifit and the Chuck Guys. Regarding what Minions are classified as what, the four main groups each have six, with Goombas being Captain Goomba, normal Goombas, Paragoombas, Goomba Towers, Big Tail Goombas, and Private Goomp; Koopa Troopas being Captain Koopa Troopa, normal Koopa Troopas, red and green Paratroopas, Dry Bones, and Corporal Paraplonk; Shy Guys being Captain Shy Guy, normal Shy Guys, Spear Guys, Fly Guys, Bandits, and Sergeant Guy; and Boos being Captain Boo, normal Boos, Tail Boos, Bomb Boos, Big Boos, and Broozers; note that Bowser Jr.'s Journey may treat Broozers differently as our page on that has them listed away from typical Boo species. Anyways, back to Sunshine, I was looking at the original trailer with the HinoKuri walking around the Bianco Hills-looking area, you can see Goomba-looking things moving around its feet a lot, and considering its "head" is a helmet in the leftover model, it's likely a similar situation. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:12, November 29, 2021 (EST)
I'm honestly not sure whether to classify it as a variant or relative. They're different enough to be like Thwomp and Whomp, which we currently have as relatives of each other, but they seem closer to Goombas than Beanies do. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:54, November 29, 2021 (EST)

Ah, thank you for asking. Yeah the Miraheze situation is a bit of a story. I ran out of money for web hosting, and I've wanted to do a few NIWA alternatives for Nintendo, SSB, and Pokemon wikis since at least 2020, but seeing as none of their NIWA counterparts are on Fandom, there was not any urgency to launch it. I remember on an SSB proposal I promised Waluigi Time and others that I was safely backing up the SSB content elsewhere, just as the Smash Bros. situation here can be a bit of a mess, esp because I think many here probably don't want to use SmashWiki. I didn't create The Kirby Encyclopedia (nor did I choose the site name), but I have a friend who made it and I decided to give it a makeover so that it looks even closer to the Mario Wiki style than WiKirby, which I feel has fallen from my attempt at making it like Mario Wiki. Miraheze is still a wiki farm, which isn't typically my thing, although I like how it allows for custom domains and that they regularly back up their wikis to the Internet Archive. Closest you get to "if Grifkuba were a wiki farm," I'd say. I bought the kirbywiki.com domain a month ago (crazy how it was available!) and would've assigned it to the wiki, but my friend prefers the Miraheze subdomain for now. The Mario Miraheze wiki -- I noticed someone was taking from Mario Wiki (earlier revisions) and so I tried to help them steer it in a more original direction and asked them to attribute to the original source as per CC-BY-SA requirements. As for ShoutWiki or Miraheze, I don't think they'll be bought out, but ShoutWiki is dying, and no https is not a good sign. I'm very lucky to have known Gamepedia was a trap and therefore avoid setting up Conker Wiki on it in mid-2018. I think for me and Miraheze & why it stand out is because of the archive.org backups (in case something goes wrong) as well as me owning the custom domains themselves. With Triforce Wiki being an exception, grifkuba doesn't want to host any other competitors to other NIWA wikis. Gamepedia was corporate from the start & marketed themselves as a rival to Wikia because of the infamous Oasis design at the time, but now they're on the same team! A bait and switch scam! But yeah, you gotta be careful. What was the ShoutWiki wiki that you wanted to edit but were afraid to? I'll leave you to figure out info regarding Kirby's gender as I would not know what to do there.
Also, regarding Kirby Encyclopedia, you said you were "asking for a friend" -- who is the friend? Results May Vary (talk) 20:55, January 6, 2022 (EST)
I'm an editor on FF Wiki and the founder of Wiki of Mana. A huge reason why I founded Wiki of Mana, admittedly, is because I'm not huge into the idea of turn-based RPGs, though they can sometimes be fun, and that I like how Mana games have more action and minimal RPG elements, kind of like the Warriors games. There's also the fact that FF is very close to so many other Square Enix franchises that just a single wiki would not be able to encompass it all. Mana especially, as it sometimes identifies as FF but sometimes does not. I made a coverage page on FF Wiki a while ago, which I adapted from here as I've seen some parallels between it and the Mario franchise. As for Grifkuba, they really, really need to update their website. Since Jiggywikki became a newly hosted wiki of theirs, they have received LOADS of newly hosted wikis, many of which I either founded (e.g. Spyro Wiki). I most recently helped the SaGa Wiki community off Fandom, and it's great because I would not have been able to do a SaGa wiki from the ground-up, especially because I would've mainly gone to elaborate upon the Final Fantasy Legend series info, the remakes in particular (as only the GB versions were localized as FF in North America). (c) Nintendo

Recalling Mister Wu's statements on guide legitimacy, would the same apply to serialized manga adaptations? I had a question on the other project about this. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:06, January 8, 2022 (EST)

Krunch and his nameless colleague

Page 5 of the 64 manual for Diddy Kong Racing says "his crony frowned" shortly after a sentence ending with “asked Krunch", implying Krunch is the leader of the two minions. Delsait (talk) 18:32, January 8, 2022 (EST)

Sentence structure

Do you have the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia? If so, can this phrase be worded better: "the description of [a Pipe Cannon] and as the rest of the Super Mario Land enemies use a corruption of the original names from Nintendo Power"? Is this saying that the description of a Pipe Cannon and the descriptions of the other enemies use a corruption of the original names from Nintendo Power? Will you please answer my question? Dwhitney (talk) 15:26, February 11, 2022 (EST)

Xylophone move request

In this edit you've suggested that the page Xylophone should be moved. An English name has since been found, so there is no point in renaming an article to a Japanese name. Do you mind removing the request? Spectrogram (talk) 23:12, February 3, 2022 (EST)

Shogakukan Shellcreepers

Every other species in the picture is from Super Mario World, and the Dolphins are also portrayed inaccurately compared to their actual appearance in the game. Pretty sure the turtles actually are Koopas, not Shellcreepers. Niiue - Who has lost his tail? 13:21, February 25, 2022 (EST)
