Ghosts[1] are forms in Super Mario Bros. Wonder that characters take in co-op or online play mode when they are defeated and out of play. Ghosts take the form of spirits with their legs replaced by tails and glowing the color of their character. While in this form, the screen will turn black and white, text reading "Help me!" will appear above the ghost character's head, and a five-second countdown will appear; during the countdown, the ghost character's face will gain a panicked expression and shiver in fear when the countdown is anywhere below three, and must touch another player in play or a standee to respawn in their Small form if not playing as a Yoshi or Nabbit. Otherwise, they lose a life. The player can also hold 
and 
while in play to intentionally become a ghost, then press them again as a ghost to lose a life immediately. The more times they are defeated and turned into a ghost then rescued during the same life, the shorter the ghost lifetime, indicated by the counter speeding up. When a player loses a life, they will gasp in disbelief, swirl around then vanish.
Ghosts share a similar function with Bubbles.
