First appearance Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)

Maw-Maws are enemies that first appear in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Resembling a cross between tadpoles and sirens (salamanders that only have two legs), they are featured prominently in a level named after them, Maw-Maw Mouthful. Most of them chase and eat anything and everything in their path, including other enemies and power-ups left on the ground. However, they cannot eat players, who will only take damage on contact with their mouths (unless the players are in their Goomba form via a Wonder Effect, in which case the player will be eaten and instantly lose a life). After chasing for a period of time, they stop for a moment, panting in exhaustion with their eyes wide open and their tongue hanging out. There are, however, some Maw-Maws that do not move from their spot, only changing the direction they are facing and opening their mouths when a player or projectile is a short distance in front of them.

Maw-Maws get stunned when jumped on or when they attempt to open their mouths while under a low ceiling and consequently hit their head, which can activate or break blocks above it. Maw-Maws can be defeated by jumping on them while they are stunned, ground pounding them once regardless of their current state, drill attacks, or by striking them with a single shell or with nine fireballs, but if they are facing the projectile thrown at them and they are not eating anything at that moment, they will swallow the projectile and spit it back out (with spat fireballs traveling in a straight trajectory rather than bouncing on the ground).
