Template:Item-infobox The Crate first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Crates could be Ground-Pounded to break and release either Stars or a Key. These crates on the ground were called Stationary Crates. Balloons held crates in the air, and they could be shot down by a Yoshi Egg.

The Crate later appeared in Super Mario 64. They were items that could be picked up and thrown at an enemy, they usually contain Coins. A different, specific crate appeared in Jolly Roger Bay on the bridge of the sunken ship. This specific crate was larger and had a darker shade of color. It would slide on the bridge of the sunken ship. Being hit by that specific crate would be marked by a lose of life.

A Crate is also an item container featured in the Super Smash Bros. series. Like all other containers, the Crate must be broken before the items inside can be used in battle. To break the carrier, the wooden Crate could either be picked up and tossed in the air, or be attacked repeatedly on the ground. Crates could also be thrown at opponents, although it was difficult to hit other fighters, as throwing the cumbersome container took a long amount of time. Sometimes, Crates would explode under enough stress, damaging all nearby fighters. In the original Super Smash Bros., the Crate held one to three items, and was also extremely heavy. In fact, only Donkey Kong could lift up the Crate and walk around with it; all the other fighters could only pick up the container and toss it from a stationary position.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Crate's carrying capacity was increased, revealing anywhere from three to five items when broken. The Crate was still very heavy, although all fighters could pick up the container and walk with it (albeit most could only walk very slowly because of the container's weight). Again, only Donkey Kong could walk at a relatively normal speed with a Crate in hand. Crates also appear in Super Mario Galaxy, where they are stationary items that can be Star spun to reveal items, often Star bits or coins.

The Crate, along with the Barrel, will return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, this time it will change appearance depending on the environment. For example, if it is in a Star Fox stage, it will turn into a chrome Crate. This does not change its effect, however. The game will also introduce the Sliding Box, a Crate that slides across the floor, and another box with a flammable sign label on it. This means that such box will be a dangerous item that could blow anything if it is thrown.

Crate

Item holders. You can destroy these to get at the items they contain, but be careful, because they will sometimes explode when broken. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, crates were uniform in design, but this time around, their appearance will change to match the stages. They'll sometimes look futuristic--other times, they'll look like presents with fancy ribbons.

Rolling Crate

Special crates that look like normal ones but have four wheels attached to the undersides. Try to destroy these and they will go rolling along, smashing everyone in their path. When a rolling crate is destroyed, it will reveal the same sorts of items found in normal crates. You can also jump on a rolling crate for a fun ride.

Exploding Crate

An explosive-filled box that will detonate when the box is broken. The box can be smashed with normal attacks and will also catch fire and blow up if it's exposed to any flame. Unlike ordinary crates, blast boxes do not change their appearance from stage to stage. There's one fundamental rule when dealing with these items: be out of range when they blow.
