SRoMG

True, Slamacow and DanTDM could probably be removed. The YouTube Poops are pretty much widespread memes that they were officially acknowledged by the show writers, ergo making it noteworthy. SRoMG is fan-created and has nothing officially substantial about it, so it doesn't belong on the page. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:30, 9 September 2018 (EDT)

Ah, okay. I'll remove Slamacow and DanTDM, along with SRoMG. I think the page should have guidelines, and we should at least set some obscurity limits.
Page is already asking for a rewrite, so yeah, it definitely needs some work... Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:34, 9 September 2018 (EDT)
For starters, we should move "Super Mario Remaker" to the controversy page.
Not sure on that one. It's officially acknowledged, but it's not so much a controversy. It could probably also go on the Super Mario Maker page, but this sounds like a discussion to bring up on Talk:List of references on the Internet if you really want to work on this. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:50, 9 September 2018 (EDT)
Nah, I don't think I know enough about the majority of material on the page to work on it. The page is a mess, anyways, and it'd take a very long time to clean up.

File redirects

In case we don't get around to them, please remember to mark the redirect left behind after a file is moved with {{delete}}, to let the admins know it needs to be deleted. Thank you. Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 00:02, 26 September 2018 (EDT)

I understand. I wish there was just some way to turn off automatic file redirect creations. Scrooge200 (talk) 18:22, 26 September 2018 (EDT)
Unfortunately, only admins are able to do that. However, if you're doing them in bulk, I can understand going through and marking each one for deletion would be more tedious. In this case, if there's no admins around to delete them, you can just shoot one a message saying to check the move log. Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 20:49, 26 September 2018 (EDT)
You're right, I probably could do that. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.

The images you're uploading of the WarioWare microgames seem to be larger than the system is able to put out. How are you capturing them? There doesn't seem to be a need to replace these images. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:35, 8 October 2018 (EDT)

Ah, yeah, they did need to be improved aside from maybe File:Tenderfoot.png. But is there a way you can match the proper resolution of 854 × 480 or maybe 640 × 480? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:41, 8 October 2018 (EDT)

Not sure how much you should prioritize that, as when I'm finished with my school work, I'll continue ripping the SGB DKL sprites, and then move on to DKL2. I mean, go ahead if you want to, but they'll probably be replaced shortly. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:39, 17 October 2018 (EDT)

Mainbrace Mayhem

I really like what you did on the Mainbrace Mayhem page and I hope you will improve other pages this way as well, since Arctic Abyss and a couple others have already made the jump to change from what I see. However, I would suggest that you abandon adding info on where to find minor items such as Banana Coins and DK Barrels. It would be an incredible amount of work and would low-key set a new standard for other DKC level articles, and I find that the info isn't really in the interest of readers. Simply adding the number of each item in a level would do :) Otherwise, everything is alright -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 20:36, 5 November 2018 (EST)

I am going to ask Results May Vary what they think should be done, as they are the one who began adding item locations on level pages, and you may decide what to do based on their answer. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 20:29, 7 November 2018 (EST)

Dolphin Emulator Tips and Tricks

I know I am late to this party but I can't help but notice your GameCube or Wii screenshots aren't as good as they can be. Compare your screenshot with mine in File:Beachcombing for Purple Coins.png. Essentially what Dolphin does is stretches the internal resolution to fit the given resolution of the window, even in fullscreen mode. It's faulty programming that has yet to see a proper fix (the developers partially fixed the problem but it is not fully fixed). This is a common problem that doesn't have an easy solution, but the solutions that do exist are better than default settings in Dolphin. 1x internal resolution is the default setting, and for Super Mario Galaxy, I found the internal resolution to be 640x456. So your image must have been in windowed mode maximized, and it stretched the 640x456 image to fit 1860x1016. That's why it looks so blocky. The easiest fix is to adjust the graphics settings and set the internal resolution to auto. You can also fiddle around with the window size to get the right resolution keeping the default settings, but that's more trouble than it is worth for mass replacement projects. Details here. Hope this helps. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 14:10, April 17, 2019 (EDT)

“When taking screenshots, note that some emulators can alter the display beyond what the actual hardware supports. Screenshots with a resolution close to that of the actual hardware are preferable, but upscaled shots are tolerated if there's no high-quality alternative available. However, video filters (such as 2xSal) and forced aspect ratio changes are not acceptable in any form.”
MarioWiki:Image use policy
That's what the policy states. It is possible and preferred to get 1x native quality screenshots, but the method is very convoluted and doesn't play nice with GCN and Wii games capable of widescreen. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:37, April 18, 2019 (EDT)
I mentioned it in my guide. I don't have all the available Mario/DK/Yoshi games for GCN/Wii. The listed games are what I own. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:42, April 18, 2019 (EDT)
It's best to go 4:3 for the Wii to achieve native screenshots (widescreen mode is just squished into 4:3 and then it is the TV's job to fix the incoming image to be 16:9) and make sure that aspect ratio is set to stretch. The resulting image should look like: File:SMG Freezeflame Hot and Cold Outer Surface.png This image is in 1x native. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:27, April 18, 2019 (EDT)
Technically, yes. Just don't give this 16:9 or 4:3 native resolution image too much thought. I did, but mostly as a footnote and out of sheer curiosity what was happening on a technical level. My info can easily become outdated if Dolphin's screenshot issues ever become permanently fixed. Then this conversation and guide's points are a moot point. Continue to supply above 1x native 16:9 images for the time being. That's what I have been doing lately.
Side note, right-clicking the title in Dolphin and selecting wiki will give a list of known issues with games. NSMBWii has a few graphical issues with above 1x native that are easily correctable. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 10:08, April 19, 2019 (EDT)

I just updated the GCN/Wii section, specifically native resolution screenshots, but be warned, the writing is scatterbrained and I need to seriously rework the GCN/Wii section as a whole. I hope you can understand my writing currently. Dizzy--Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:00, May 7, 2019 (EDT)

Widescreen just makes everything more complicated. I wouldn't bother, unless you set the emulated Wii to 4:3 mode and disable 16:9 mode in any compatible GCN games. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:50, May 7, 2019 (EDT)
I haven't figured out the kinks in Wii screenshot taking. The technique I developed was tested on GCN games. In theory, should work on Wii. Also, there is are two 16:9/4:3 settings. The one you want is found in "Config" and the "Wii" tab, not the "Graphics" and "General" tab. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:05, May 7, 2019 (EDT)
Aspect ratio should be stretched, 1x native, and make sure to uncheck internal resolution frame dumps. I noticed that if I forgot the latter setting, things just automatically happen. That's why the guide tells you to uncheck it. As for NSMBW, the letterboxing happens for me as well. I guess that is just the way the game runs. :/ --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 20:59, May 7, 2019 (EDT)
Just revert it to the hi-res version. Like I said, Wii screenshots have kinks to work out. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 21:17, May 7, 2019 (EDT)

??? Use the canvas color to change them all at once. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:50, April 22, 2019 (EDT)

"That's the original SMW because it doesn't look horrendous"

What is this oxymoron? Not to be rude, but SMW had some of the worst sprite artistry in the entire franchise, including the third-party arcade game home ports. SMAS SMW only changed Luigi's sprites, and SMA2 actually improved a lot graphically, like Magikoopa's incorrectly-encoded palette and the inexplicable three fingers on the Koopas. It did not fix the inexcusably bad color mapping on the Blarggs, so there's that.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:09, May 24, 2019 (EDT)

Please do not do that. The image was perfectly fine. We already have an imageMedia:SMWMvsB.png that shows the full screen of the fight. This one was intended to focus on th clown car, hence the cropping. Additionally, Luigi's sprite objectively looks better in the SMAS version, so changing it to the original just makes no sense. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 03:41, May 25, 2019 (EDT)
Again, focus of of the image is the point with it (as it appears larger in the image due to the cropping), not accuracy to game's screen parameters. Anyways, while the colors are desaturated due to the GBA's lighting situation, I will in this one case alone begrudgingly say that the GBA version has better graphics than the SNES version, solely because some of the bad sprite art is improved. SMM2 filenames

Figured I'd ask since you already seem to have checked - do the rest of the vocal sound effects align with the final English names, and do you know the filename of the Cheep Chomp that makes a cameo in the New Super Mario Bros. U style? LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:42, September 4, 2019 (EDT)

The Cheep Chomp could just literally be part of the background (I've seen it usually seen it as bakubaku), but in regards to the 'singing parts' of Koopa Troopa Car: is it identified as "Koopa Troopa Car" or "Koopa Car"? LinkTheLefty (talk) 07:45, September 5, 2019 (EDT)
I suppose the Cheep Chomp is part of the background animation and not a separate object. Another thing I'm wondering: what are the filenames for the Toads? I assume the Chief is Kinopico or some variant thereof, but I'm more curious about the Taskmaster, NPC Blue Toad, and playable blue Toad. Also, you wouldn't happen to have access to the Yoshi's Island DS filenames by any chance, would you? LinkTheLefty (talk) 01:35, September 20, 2019 (EDT)

RE: Editor icons

They're not YouTube screenshots, they're cropped direct captures of the game. Editor icons are legitimate images since many of them depict the enemies differently than in the actual level, and if you look at Super Mario Maker 2#Course elements, they're the only way to represent each element in each style in a compact and even format, and replacing one or all of them with sprites (especially since many of them are differently sized) would make them look out of place and very inconsistent. I'm not saying it's the wrong sprite, I said to just upload it separately. Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 21:46, September 9, 2019 (EDT)

Sorry, I forgot before the game came out some of them were from 1080 YouTube videos, but I don't see what difference it makes. I didn't take them through the Switch, I used a capture device that takes png screenshots; I'm well aware of our image policy. Like I said, it would still look awkward rescaling the differently sized ones - We did this with placeholder Mario Maker 1 sprites before 2's release (try doing that with long or tall sprites like Wigglers, Snake Blocks or Skewers and you'll see what I mean). Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:16, September 9, 2019 (EDT)
Wait, are you saying these are ripped, in-game sprites of the course icons (including the NSMBU and 3D World styles?), not the elements themselves? Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:50, September 9, 2019 (EDT)

Naming policy

According to SMW:NAMING:

  • The identifier "character" is used when differentiating a character from non-character(s) which share the same name (e.g. Ninja (character)). If a character shares the same name as another character, the title of the game or series they appear in is used (e.g. Lily (Paper Mario)). If a character name is used more than once within the same game, a species or custom identifier is used (e.g. Slim (Pixl)).

In other words, characters do not get specific type identifiers right off the bat, privy to what you believed was the policy. And yes, Porplemontage himself has repeatedly explained why that exception is the way it is, having summed up his argument here:

This further makes more sense as naming policy suggests using a "Thing" identifier (pixl) over a game identifier.

The "thing" in this case is character. If character can't be used, then you move to #2, which is game. Slim is forced to go to #4 since game can't be used, while Boomer can safely stay at #2 and use game. That the two Pixls end up in different places is simply a result of them needing to differentiate from different things (Slim (Flopside) forces it). I understand it can be considered annoying, but whether or not they match is really neither here nor there - they are each a different case with different needs. As you said, if you do the move then these three links are inconsistent since one wouldn't use game (and there is no reason for it not to use game since they are all from different games). So basically you want to open up the character identifier to get more specific before moving to game (as it used to be). This gets into its own weird problems of what should be used, and having some awkward identifiers. I think going to the game name sooner avoids that awkwardness in the most objective way possible. If you tally up the amount of "problems" with each system, I'll take the current Pixl "mismatch" and a bunch of objective game identifiers versus a ton of human/flower/whatever identifiers. The Slim (Pixl) case is a direct result of Nintendo using the same character name twice within one game and rightfully should be the one awkward situation because that is a confusing thing to do. Opening up custom character identifiers before moving to game creates awkward cases which are completely the wiki's doing, and we should try keep our hands clean and minimize any impact. No matter what system we land on there will be weird cases to deal with. I think the current system minimizes the damage and is the "least bad" option, and I don't want to keep changing things around. So I'll veto --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 20:56, December 30, 2019 (EST)

What exactly is your point with the picture in your edit summary? I don't know if you fully understood what I said. Mario Sakuraba (talk) 21:08, June 14, 2020 (EDT)

Prisma Museum image

The original image you replaced with File:PMCS Prisma Museum.png was lit up, so do you think you can recapture the image later with the room lit up? It would show the room better. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:46, July 12, 2020 (EDT)

Oh boy, that's not good. But yes, the image is much clearer now, thanks :) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 23:02, July 12, 2020 (EDT)

Scorching Sandpaper Desert

Since you already beat the game, and I haven't even got to that part yet, could you make Scorching Sandpaper Desert because there are a lot of red links for that article? Sprite of a Goomba from Super Mario Bros.DarkNightSprite of a Piranha Plant from Super Mario World 18:37, July 24, 2020 (EDT)

Can you make Shogun Studios please? I would do it myself, but I'm stuck at the Water Vellumental Shrine :( Sprite of a Goomba from Super Mario Bros.DarkNightSprite of a Piranha Plant from Super Mario World 00:21, August 21, 2020 (EDT)

Rescue Squad apprentice

Thanks for adding the quotes for Rescue Squad Chief. I'm working on the article for the apprentice. Would "Rescue Squad apprentice" suffice? Lady Bow from Paper Mario. Green Star Lady Bow from Paper Mario. 15:25, August 28, 2020 (EDT)

Ripping Sprites

How do you rip sprites from in-game? Do you need a special tool? Sprite of a Goomba from Super Mario Bros.DarkNightSprite of a Piranha Plant from Super Mario World 00:40, September 8, 2020 (EDT)

Is it free? :/ Sprite of a Goomba from Super Mario Bros.DarkNightSprite of a Piranha Plant from Super Mario World 11:21, September 8, 2020 (EDT)

PMCS Character Suggestions

Can you think of any other minor characters in Paper Mario: Color Splash deserving of their own articles? I was thinking of viewing a full walk through of the game at some point - that's actually how I found out about, or at least remembered, the Shai Guyz. --Lady Bow from Paper Mario. Green Star Lady Bow from Paper Mario. 23:18, September 11, 2020 (EDT)

Piper's friends intrigue me, as they are all currently redirects to Piper. However, the article mentions nothing about how/where any of them (except Yella) are found, how they are introduced, or what they contribute to the memories. This is certainly something that earns them each an article. Lady Bow from Paper Mario. Green Star Lady Bow from Paper Mario. 10:56, September 12, 2020 (EDT)
I have recently started a walkthrough of the game to spot unique characters throughout. The only one I have so far is the Paint Guy who steals from the red Mini Paint Star in Ruddy Road and leads Mario on that sort of wild goose chase. Question is, what would/should we name this article? His name is never really mentioned, save Huey generically calling him a Shy Guy for hints. Lady Bow from Paper Mario. PMTOK filenames

I actually don't have my own copy of The Origami King yet, and it seems you're still somewhat more comfortable with Switch filenames, so I figured I'd ask a couple of questions: 1) Is "Co Gasagoso" still the name used for the tiny Scuttlebugs, and if not, can you add the file path of the new name to the article (Co Gasagoso should still be used in the context of Sticker Star)? 2) I don't know if the tiny Goombas are identified by name at any point in the game, so does their internal name indicate if they should be "Mini Goombas" as in most games or "Small Goombas" as in Color Splash, and does the "Mini/Small Paragoomba" have a name? 3) Are the different Cheep Cheep and Blooper sizes labeled any differently, and are the 400cm/"Legendary" ones supposed to be the "Big" ones? 4) What are the Paper Macho Soldiers called (namely interested in Mega Paper Macho Pokey, Paper Macho Parabomb, and the smaller version of Paper Macho Goomba from Hotfoot Crater), and how does Paper Macho Goomba compare to the game's Goomba Mask? 5) Is Professor Toad's internal name at all similar to Prof. Kinopio? 6) the internal names of Olivia and Olly have me curious too, particularly since "Olly" makes me think of, er, something else (I know it's a real name but I half-expected Treehouse to add a joke about it since there already was an out-of-place reference in Super Mario Adventures). Also, are you planning to get 3D All-Stars? I'd be especially interested in knowing later if the file structure of the Super Mario 64 port will look closer to the iQue assets or Super Mario 64 DS, or if it'll be completely revamped. Take your time, and thanks in advance. LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:59, September 14, 2020 (EDT)

Turns out Super Mario 3D All-Stars uses emulation, so unless there just happens to be some particularly interesting emulator comments, probably nothing of use... 1) "gsgm" presumably stands for "Gasagoso Mini" if accurate, but too abbreviated to be usable unless there's a better reference. 2) Oh, by "Paragoomba", I meant the Mini Goomba with wings. 3) So there seems to be no one specific "Big" size in this game. I think the "Legendary" articles could stay, but the "Big" articles should be updated to reflect this. Are some of the small fishing sizes of Cheep Cheep and Blooper smaller than their appearance as enemies? 4) Paper Macho Parabomb should be Paper Macho Bob-omb, though uncertain if it should remain a derivative of Parabomb or be changed to Bob-omb. Please add references to the article and Paper Macho Lava Bubble's Japanese name if it has one. 5) Looks like it. Is Professor Toad called "Toad" anywhere in the game like that Japanese trailer, ala Bob-omb/Bobby? 6) OK, so probably the developers knew he was gonna be a king but decided his name later, originally making a clearer origami pun but localizers rendering it as "Olly". What was Olivia again? Also, are the "true ending" post-credits versions separate objects? LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:18, September 19, 2020 (EDT)
