Adminship rights

Give them to me. I need it for import and export Explain to me why pages like Donkey Kong are instantly imported that fast?--MegaTron1XD:p 20:48, 28 October 2010 (EDT)

I was also admin at the DK Wiki, so if you could, I would like to be grandfathered over. Omega Tyrant 20:43, 28 October 2010 (EDT)

What the heck has happened to this wiki? It is completely copied from Donkey Kong Wikia and it is a big mess. Why did this mess happen? Slipknot Darkrai 17:47, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

How is it a mess? --Porplemontage 17:49, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

There is entirely all pages copied from Donkey Kong Wikia. Can I be a sysop and help cleanup this entire mess? Slipknot Darkrai 17:51, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I don't know about that. Your request isn't faring too well. --Porplemontage 17:54, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Yeah I suppose so.... I wanted to use those adminship power to cleanup this wiki's imports and completely restyle it. SO that is what happened. BTW, those requests were from a few weeks ago. Slipknot Darkrai 17:58, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

(edit conflict)
What? Why would you need those powers to "clean up" a page? Do not be power hungry, you're not getting admin powers any time soon. Porple, did I get my rights back yet? HavocReaper48 18:01, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Right, but the decision is up the the other admins. --Porplemontage 18:00, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I need them because this wiki is a total mess. I need all of the pages to be deleted. Slipknot Darkrai 18:02, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Are you insane? --Porplemontage 18:04, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

What why am I insane for saying that? Slipknot Darkrai 18:05, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Needing all the pages to be deleted? Please don't vandalize the wiki! --Porplemontage 18:10, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

This wiki is an exact duplicate of Donkey Kong Wikia. Why? Slipknot Darkrai 18:11, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Because the wiki is moving... --Porplemontage 18:13, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Oh Okay then, BTW can I change the script on pages on this wiki? Slipknot Darkrai 19:45, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

That'll mess up page contents if you do it wrong, which you likely will. Seems obvious because you honestly don't know Wiki coding or why this is a duplicate :/--MegaTron1XD:p 23:58, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Cuz itza better then Wikia yeah it is--Emboar 19:56, 11 May 2011 (EDT)

Uh

I'm confused right now... I went to Bulbapedia's MediaWiki:Pagetitle-view-mainpage thing and figured we could do the same here, but it's not working? Our MediaWiki:Pagetitle-view-mainpage is not updating? HavocReaper48 22:58, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

There was a bug with that and I just changed our main page title manually. --Porplemontage 23:16, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Thanks but that's not the slogan I wanted... I would prefer " Donkey Kong Wiki, with more DK info than Cranky Kong can offer ". '''<span style="font-family:Magneto;">[[User:HavocReaper48|<span style="color:orangered;">--Havoc</span><span style="color:darkred;">Reaper</span><span style="color:red;">'48</span>]] 23:22, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
...and my sig just messed up too? HavocReaper48 23:24, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Your sig is messed up because you didn't check to Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link). --Porplemontage 23:24, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I was wondering what that meant. Not used to this "NIWA" format. Also we need an update to the css/js: the option to reduce youtube embed length/widths? (main page's is much larger than the wikia version, which is not good). --HavocReaper48 00:07, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
Thanks! --Porplemontage 01:10, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

Where is the "Upload a new version of this file"? -- Carulosu 13:06, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

You got it! --Porplemontage 14:33, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

Why

Why is everyone here instead of on Donkey Kong Wikia? Slipknot Darkrai 16:57, 31 October 2010 (EDT)

Last I checked, the wiki is leaving Wikia. --Porplemontage 17:36, 31 October 2010 (EDT)
If you would prefer to use the old wikia, SD, then feel free to do so.--Vincent TranParatroopaSMW.gif 17:39, 31 October 2010 (EDT)

"Unpatrolled" edits

Uh, do we have a patroller system or what? I see "unpatrolled" marks all over Recent Changes. --HavocReaper'48 22:59, 1 November 2010 (EDT)

Some edits are patrolled and some aren't. Hit diff and scroll down to mark as patrolled. --Porplemontage 23:29, 1 November 2010 (EDT)

polls, but on smashwiki

While this is the Dk wiki, I had no other way to contact you. Do you know what happened to the polls (<poll> </poll>) on SmashWiki? They don't work, and while I've asked Miles and OT, they can't answer.--Vincent TranParatroopaSMW.gif 00:05, 2 November 2010 (EDT)

That poll extension had some security issues. Right now PollDaddy is the best option. --Porplemontage 00:12, 2 November 2010 (EDT)
I was about to say that I saw that OT asked you about this, but thank you for responding--Vincent TranParatroopaSMW.gif 00:14, 2 November 2010 (EDT)

I think the sidebar's missing something...

...like, the "create new page" option? --HavocReaper'48 17:47, 5 November 2010 (EDT)

It never had that option. --Porplemontage 18:28, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
It did on the Donkey Kong Wikia. --HavocReaper'48 18:32, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
Wikia has a ton of features we don't have. --Porplemontage 13:38, 6 November 2010 (EDT)
There are options tho, Special:WantedPages can be linked to with the alt text saying "Create New Pages" like: [[Special:WantedPages|Create New Pages]] Also, you could do something like we did at WiKirby (click to see)] using a simple code: {{Special:WantedPages/10}} "10" can be changed to however many you want displayed. It generates this:

Countdown Template

Hello Porplemontage! I was hoping that if its not too much trouble, you'd be willing to install this countdown template code to the wiki, we'd really appreciate it! If not then I understand. -The Forgotten Beast BANANA SLAMMA!!! 23:58, 12 November 2010 (EST)

You really don't need an extension just to implement some JavaScript. Try this:

Is that customizable as well? --Covah 13:59, 28 November 2010 (EST)

Yes it is. MediaWiki:Vector.css, same idea as Monobook. --Porplemontage 14:08, 28 November 2010 (EST)

Spamming attacks

Hey, can you enable the captcha newly registered on this Wiki as well? It too is under a mass spamming attack. Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 23:14, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Yep. --Porplemontage 23:35, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Special:Webchat issue

It still links to the Freenode channel #wikia-dk when it should link to Gamesurge's #dk channel, can you change that? --HavocReaper 22:27, 27 May 2011 (EDT)

Sure. --Porplemontage 04:30, 28 May 2011 (EDT)
It is working properly now. Thank you. DoctorPain99 DoctorPain99.png 10:08, 28 May 2011 (EDT)

Monaco

Could you put the Monaco skin on for DKWiki? I've found instructions to do so. --HavocReaper 19:32, 3 February 2012 (EST)

Yeah; it's on. Have a preference for this? --Porplemontage 19:58, 3 February 2012 (EST)
We had a custom skin at MediaWiki:Monaco.css --HavocReaper 20:07, 3 February 2012 (EST)

Multi-Upload

Could you increase the amount of upload-able files on Special:MultipleUpload to ten? Plus, the URL upload does not work properly so could you remove that? --HavocReaper 18:49, 12 February 2012 (EST)

URL upload doesn't work at all or just on the multi-upload page? --Porplemontage 20:09, 12 February 2012 (EST)
Just on multi-upload. --HavocReaper 20:45, 12 February 2012 (EST)

So, um, any word on increasing the max amount of multi-uploadable files (5--->10)? --HavocReaper 20:29, 21 February 2012 (EST)

Footer

Hey, I like the addition of the footer thing that links to your network of wikis... perhaps it should be colored differently on certain wikis to match the color scheme, though, as it looks kinda bad on KH Wiki. It looks fine elsewhere. --Starphoria 15:24, 18 March 2012 (EDT)

Thanks, I've considered that as well. Perhaps it's something we'll do. --Porplemontage 15:51, 18 March 2012 (EDT)

G&W-wiki

Please grant users the ability to edit their talk page while blocked. THEAVENGINGBANDIT 17:44, 2 April 2012 (EDT)

I tried blocking a user (to see if users had the ability to edit their talk page) and there's no "Allow this user to edit own talk page while blocked" while I was blocking. And I'm talking about the g&w wiki where BlindColours is the oversight. THEAVENGINGBANDIT 19:20, 2 April 2012 (EDT)

Template Issue

Suddenly, all of the navboxes aren't centered without the <center> thing. Beforehand they were centered just fine. Did you modify something in the wiki code? --HavocReaper 13:46, 24 June 2012 (EDT)

Ok, this is a confirmed bug in MediaWiki 1.19 and I've disabled the setting that causes the bug! --Porplemontage (talk) 14:19, 24 June 2012 (EDT)

I'm afraid that the extension might have some issues. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:32, 31 October 2012 (EDT)
So basically we can't employ this feature until they fix the vulnerability problems? Aw man. --HavocReaper 18:39, 31 October 2012 (EDT)

SSB Wiki's down and what not

Special pages can still be accessed with the Wiki background and logo loading, although it appears that only the WhosOnline page and EditCount page (with the page actually loading the editing information) are working so far. Hitting random still takes me to a page, but with an error message showing up identical to the one on the main page. Not expecting a magical instant fix here, but just telling you in case you weren't checking in on us. MegaTron1:p 00:54, 4 September 2013 (EDT)

In addition, special pages that record category count and pages with the most edits to them are still up and running fine, so just a side note. MegaTron1:p 00:57, 4 September 2013 (EDT)

Yeah, I'm running a MediaWiki update script on it right now. But it's taking a while to update the database, sorry. Won't be much longer! --Porplemontage (talk) 00:58, 4 September 2013 (EDT)
All right then, thanks for clearing that issue up. MegaTron1:p 00:59, 4 September 2013 (EDT)

Wiki Bot

I was wondering if this wiki could have a bot. Since Super Mario Wiki has one, I thought it would be nice for DK Wiki to also have a bot for maintenance reasons. Atari Jaguar (talk) 21:40, 30 July 2014 (EDT)

That's just me running MediaWiki's fix redirect script when a major page is moved. It's not even a real bot. --Porplemontage (talk) 23:53, 30 July 2014 (EDT)

Cleanup

Hi! While you're online could you delete some of the pages marked with the speedy-delete tag? They've been sitting there for a little more than a week... -The Retro Gamer (talk) 15:17, 9 August 2014 (EDT)

It's been handled. In the future, it's probably best to not ask Porple to handle administrative stuff, since he likely only does quick maintenance checks on Wiki coding and what not, as opposed to checking in for specific things. MegaTron1:p 16:46, 9 August 2014 (EDT)

New Extension

Could you add this extension (which requires this extension as a prerequisite.) I think it would be a nice addition to the wiki. -The Retro Gamer (talk) 18:58, 7 September 2014 (EDT)

That notifications system is interesting. I don't think we need it right now but it's something I'd like to look into and demo on a test server. --Porplemontage (talk) 21:15, 7 September 2014 (EDT)
Great! If you add the extension, please tell me. - --The Retro Gamer

New articles and images

Hi, there is this vandal who is constantly uploading spam images and creating vandalism articles. I was hoping that you can restrict new image uploads and new articles to autoconfirmed users and above. This should minimize the vandalism on our wiki. Atari Jaguar (talk) 12:18, 5 November 2014 (EST)

OK, good idea. --Porplemontage (talk) 13:30, 5 November 2014 (EST)

There's a category issue.

I was using Category:Testing to make all the level categories consistent, but I can't figure out how to remove Jungle Jaunt from the category. It appears to be a MediaWiki issue, as the category itself does not appear on the Jungle Jaunt page. - --The Retro Gamer

Adding Hard Drop to interwiki.

Could you add Hard Drop Wiki (http://harddrop.com/wiki/) to Special:Interwiki (presumably with "harddrop" as the prefix)? It's the only NIWA wiki missing from there, so it would be useful to have it there for navigation, sidebars, etc. --The Retro Gamer 23:02, 12 April 2015 (EDT)

Ok --Porplemontage (talk) 23:06, 12 April 2015 (EDT)

It appears Golden Sun Universe needs to be fixed in Interwiki... it should be http://goldensunwiki.net/wiki/, not http://goldensunwiki.net/, since page links don't work correctly with the current link. --The Retro Gamer 17:13, 13 April 2015 (EDT)

Undeleting MediaWiki:Uploadtext

I recreated MediaWiki:Uploadtext. It already had text on it even though it was "deleted", so that's why I felt justified editing it to change the upload text. I just wanted to let you know directly in case you wanted to redelete it to combat the security issues with Multi Upload (that's what your last summary said when you deleted it.) --The Retro Gamer 23:24, 3 May 2015 (EDT)

Ok. Deleting a MediaWiki system message just returns it to the default, which is what I did before. --Porplemontage (talk) 02:09, 4 May 2015 (EDT)

Any way to compare to articles with Mario Wiki quicker?

I'm curious if it's possible to modify Special:ComparePages so that articles on Donkey Kong Wiki can be checked for plagiarism from Super Mario Wiki (perhaps through Special:Interwiki?) --The Retro Gamer 21:40, 29 June 2015 (EDT)

Sorry, but the wikis aren't really linked in a meaningful way where that's feasible. --Porplemontage (talk) 09:02, 30 June 2015 (EDT)

Baron K. Roolenstein

The page Baron K. Roolenstein needs rewriting because the article is taking from Super Mario Wiki.

Then tag it with Template:MarioWiki. Please make a separate headline if you aren't replying to this headline, and address me (or Atari Jaguar, if he's active) with administrative queries, not Porplemontage, since Porplemontage mainly works on the wiki's coding, not the content of the wiki. Also, remember to sign your name. --The Retro Gamer 07:25, 30 June 2015 (EDT)

It appears we have a new NIWA wiki!

Inkipedia is the newest NIWA wiki, and it needs to be added to the interwiki (probably under the prefix "splatoon", although if you have a better one, use it.) --The Retro Gamer 11:41, 4 July 2015 (EDT)

Font question

Is it possible to implement a font that has a black outline, or otherwise make text to have a black outline? (Example) --HavocReaper48 02:01, 1 July 2016 (EDT)

Yes. --Porplemontage (talk) 02:14, 1 July 2016 (EDT)

Monobook edits have broken some things

There are two that seems to be broken because of the edits to the Monobook CSS file. The first is the checkbox that lets Recent Changes automatically refresh every fifteen seconds, and the second is the "hide" button on templates. --The Retro Gamer 13:33, 7 July 2016 (EDT)

Thank you for reporting. We have just updated to MediaWiki 1.27, so please let me know if you find more problems. Collapsible tables will have to be updated to use the mw-collapsible and mw-collapsed classes. I'll look into the recent changes thing. --Porplemontage (talk) 13:57, 7 July 2016 (EDT)

Got an error trying deleting a file?

Hi Porple. So I was trying to delete this file when I received this interesting error. It's not super important that this file is deleted or anything but I figured you should know about this "quirk" since I've never seen this error before. --HavocReaper48 19:00, 4 December 2016 (EST)

Thanks, I fixed it! --Porplemontage (talk) 19:05, 4 December 2016 (EST)

Reflections

I hope I'm not bothering you: I've been thinking about this wiki and its purpose.

With the level of inactivity on this wiki, it seems like merging this with Super Mario Wiki might be a good option. Given how inactive this wiki is, and its orders of magnitude lower site rank than SMW, I see more encyclopedic merit in consolidating information than having two separate places.

Traditionally, the argument against such a merge would be that this wiki is presenting the "Donkey Kong" perspective on Mario. But honestly, encyclopedic content is encyclopedic content, and perspectives largely take place in page categorization. And allow me to clarify what I mean by "merge": a careful page-by-page examination of content on DKWiki, adding any notable information to SMW when it is not already included. I have confidence in SMW's notability policy as a barrier for entry; community consensus is a good formula for strong wikis.

If this were to be merged, then there are several options for redirecting. One option would be to just redirect every page here to its equivalent SMW page (simple url replacement). I note that the most closely related page on SMW is DKWiki Portal, perhaps this main page could redirect there.

But all of this comes from a position of ignorance. I don't know if there's a different perspective at the backend site handling. And of course, I would probably want to discuss this with the active editors within the last year to hear their opinions on the matter.

--The Retro Gamer 23:26, 23 March 2018 (EDT)

Hi there. I agree with you on this and support the merge. --Porplemontage (talk) 01:25, 24 March 2018 (EDT)

(Hopefully) easy tweak

Hi. Could you make it so the sitenotice is not dismissable? I tried editing part of the CSS which was commented in a way which suggested it would make the sitenotice not disappear, but removing it didn't do anything (See these two edits: [1] [2]). If it's not an easy fix, that's fine, but I was hoping that the sitenotice could behave like Super Mario Wiki. --The Retro Gamer 20:11, 24 March 2018 (EDT)

Sure thing. --Porplemontage (talk) 22:24, 24 March 2018 (EDT)

Comparing pages with Super Mario Wiki (II)

Previously, in #Any way to compare to articles with Mario Wiki quicker?, you said the wikis aren't connected in any meaningful way. However, there must be some way to pull the wiki script from an external page (i.e. a page on Super Mario Wiki). How complicated would it be to add that functionality to Special:ComparePages? I was hoping it might be possible, because that would expedite the transition process. --The Retro Gamer 15:15, 25 March 2018 (EDT)

I don't really know how to do that. You'd have to get the MarioWiki page text from the API, and then compare it to the DKWiki text, but also modify the compare tool since it's used to just accepting two revision ID's on the same wiki. You could use these types of URLs http://www.dkwiki.com/index.php?action=raw&title=Donkey_Kong_Country and https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?action=raw&title=Donkey_Kong_Country and copy the text to a diff tool. A diff tool that accepts URLs would be great. Maybe you could write a script where you give it a page name, it gets the text from both those raw URL's, and compares? --Porplemontage (talk) 16:05, 25 March 2018 (EDT)
Those urls are helpful. I can put together a script that that pulls those, now that I know that url formatting, but I was hoping to utilize the MediaWiki compare api. I'll probably look into that a bit more, but another compare algorithm could always be used, I suppose. --The Retro Gamer 16:26, 25 March 2018 (EDT)
I've been looking through the Mediawiki API, and I found something that does exactly what I want: the compare action. Unfortunately, it only supports direct text comparison (using |totext=) in version 1.30, while we're on version 1.26.4. If you're willing to do an update to the latest version of MediaWiki (1.30), that would allow me to easily implement an external wiki compare function. I note all of your other public wikis are on version 1.27.4; if you do decide to do an update, you might consider doing a batch update. --The Retro Gamer 01:49, 26 March 2018 (EDT)
Interesting. The other wikis are on 1.27 because I upgrade them between LTS versions. This wiki is on 1.26 because 1.27+ requires a newer version of PHP, and I can't upgrade that on this particular hosting. However, it looks like you should be able to use this with the rvdifftotext param, since apparently it was only moved from the Revisions API to the Compare API in 1.30? --Porplemontage (talk) 02:08, 26 March 2018 (EDT)

Site statistics

Presumably, you gain some amount of data about how visitors interact with the site. Do you count unique category visits? It would be useful for knowing which categories are notable enough to be kept, and which ones never get visited, therefore failing their purpose as navigational tools and deserving deletion. The thing is, this wiki isn't heavily visited enough to have meaningful statistics (because anything I do would outweigh other visitors, but I guess that's why the measurement would need to be unique vistors.), especially considering that most people probably don't click on categories (at least, that's what I imagine). I would guess that MarioWiki probably has more meaningful data. In particular, I'm interested in whether the categories related to level name wordplay (Category:Areas with alliterative names, Category:Areas with names that rhyme, Category:Areas with names that are puns, Category:Areas named after characters) are worth merging to MarioWiki. --The Retro Gamer 08:41, 16 April 2018 (EDT)

Category traffic is quite low. They probably serve more of a purpose for editors and organization. Maybe a proposal to settle it. --Porplemontage (talk) 14:11, 16 April 2018 (EDT)
I assume when you make that statement, it applies generally to both sites? That's about what I expected from personal experience, but I though I might ask anyway. I'm already gauging the general feeling about them on the Mario Wiki boards, so I'll be able to draft the most well-informed proposal when I do make a proposal with those categories. --The Retro Gamer 19:22, 16 April 2018 (EDT)
