Torches are stone objects that appear in the 3D Super Mario games since Super Mario Galaxy. Lighting unlit torches with the Fire form can open a new pathway or collectibles.

History

Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2

Torches in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 typically carry either a blue or a red flame. Sometimes, extinguishing ignited torches by spinning can release a coin.

Super Mario 3D Land

Torches return in Super Mario 3D Land, working mostly as they did in the Super Mario Galaxy games, though they cannot be put out, and lighting them usually reveals coins. In World 5-2, the four that lead to the second Star Medal play the "puzzle solved" jingle from The Legend of Zelda series upon being lit.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

In Super Mario 3D World and its port, lighting torches can brighten up dark areas (like Switchblack Ruins) and reveal Green Stars (as seen in Piranha Creeper Creek after Dark, where every torch in each room must be lit to get them).

Super Mario Odyssey

Due to the absence of power-ups in Super Mario Odyssey, Mario must instead capture a Fire Bro or Fire Piranha Plant to light torches, which reveal Power Moons.
