Divots,[1] originally known as holes or rings,[2] are indentations in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They appear only in levels that feature the Star Ball. In Super Mario Galaxy, yellow-ringed divots launch the Star Ball from one area to another. The blue-ringed ones are goals that will break the Star Ball, allowing Mario (or Luigi) to grab the Power Star it contains. Divots have inconsistent designs in Super Mario Galaxy 2, with the ones that launch the Star Ball simply being whatever indentation is at a planetoid's apex and the goals being whatever is the last hole of the level.
