Template:Infobox Mario Kart 7[1] is an upcoming racing game in development for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the ninth installment of the Mario Kart series, the seventh in the main series, the third on a handheld console, and the first for the Nintendo 3DS. The game's release date in the United States is scheduled for December 2011. In the game, players will be able to exchange Ghost Data and play online in multiplayer mode.[2] Nintendo has confirmed that this game will bring "a bunch of new elements" to the Mario Kart series.[3]

Gameplay

In this new installment of the Mario Kart series, Coins will make a prominent return. Coins have not been featured in this way in the last Mario Kart games since Mario Kart: Super Circuit. The option to select classic Mario Kart tracks is also available again in this game. Mario Kart 7 also has some new features. Players can now use air gliders, which can be useful for navigating through the air and also use propellers to drive underwater. In addition, players may now assemble their own karts, rather than select pre-set karts as in older Mario Kart games. It is possible to select the body of the kart, the wheels, and other additional accessories such as the glider, although some parts need to be unlocked before they can be used. When the player is selecting a character and changing things to their kart the selection theme is played. [4] Mario Kart 7 marks the return of the traditional eight characters per race, as opposed to the total of twelve as seen in Mario Kart Wii. It will also be compatible with both SpotPass and StreetPass.[5]

Among other gameplay's innovations is the vehicle's behavior in the courses. Each element to assemble the vehicle will have a function that will grant advantage on certain courses: for example, the type of wheel selected may work well in concrete road, soil or rough terrain that a course may have. Gliders also provide speed and duration for the vehicle when airborne and can be controlled using only the Circle Pad. Additionally, driving underwater, the kart's handling, speed and drifting can considerably change compared to when driving on land.

It is currently unclear whether or not motorbikes, which made their first appearance in Mario Kart Wii, will return in the game, as they have not yet been shown in any trailer or screenshot.

In Mario Kart 7, unlike in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, if a homing item is about to hit the player (such as a Red Shell), there will not be an on-screen warning to let them know if a homing projectile is about to hit them because you can see them on the bottom screen.[10]

Trivia

  • In the E3 demo version, the banners at the start/finish lines use the new Mario Kart logo.[11]
  • Shigeru Miyamoto joked that the game should be called Super Mario Kite.[15]
  • This game marks the first time that a counting number is used in a title for a Mario Kart game.
    • It's also the fourth Mario Kart game overall to have something other than the console name in a title. However, Super Mario Kart, which appeared on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, shared the Super with its console name. Also, Mario Kart: Super Circuit was called Mario Kart Advance in Japan. In that case Mario Kart 7 would only be the second game to have something other than the console name in a title.
  • This is the first time Koopa Troopa is a playable character on a Mario Kart game for a portable system.
