The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, better known as F.L.U.D.D. or FLUDD and pronounced "Flood", is a water pack from Super Mario Sunshine. It seems that F.L.U.D.D. is Mario's equivalent of Luigi's Poltergust 3000.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Sunshine

F.L.U.D.D. introduces itself to Mario.

In Super Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D can be used by Mario to spray water, by pressing the R button. With this, Mario can perform many tasks from enhancing his acrobatics to cleaning off Goop. Mario first finds F.L.U.D.D on the ground near a strange salesman. He has access to F.L.U.D.D throughout the game; however, it is taken by Shadow Mario when Mario enters a Secret Level that hasn't been cleared, or in episode 3 of Pianta Village. In the latter, Mario retrieves F.L.U.D.D after finding a way around the firey goop which covers the level.

F.L.U.D.D and its nozzles were invented by E. Gadd. F.L.U.D.D seems to possess artificial intelligence, and can feel emotions such as joy and fear. Because of this, the water pack acts as Mario's sidekick and guide during his stay on Isle Delfino, giving Mario handy advice.

F.L.U.D.D. shuts down.

After Mario's battle with Bowser, F.L.U.D.D malfunctions, asking Mario if it was of assistance before it shuts off completely. However, this doesn't spell the end for the sentient water pack; The Toads who came along on the vacation fixed it up and returned it to Mario. Right as the game ends, F.L.U.D.D happily exclaims, "The vacation starts now."

Super Mario Galaxy

Large objects resembling F.L.U.D.D.'s nozzles appear in some galaxies - namely, the Honeyhive galaxy and Deep Dark galaxy. As their names would suggest, Water Shooters fire water, and Fire Shooters produce fire. Nozzles are also used in the Deep Dark Galaxy to blow Mario around when he pops inside a bubble, sort of like the Bubble Blowing mini-games.

Mario Tennis series

Several F.L.U.D.D.s appear in Mario Power Tennis; these F.L.U.D.D.s are used to clear away the Goop that can accumulate in the Delfino Plaza Court. Also, in the mini-game Tic-Tac-Glow, the player must use balls of water shot by several F.L.U.D.D.s to clear-away Goop in a tic-tac-toe like game.

WarioWare series

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

F.L.U.D.D. makes a cameo appearance in WarioWare: Smooth Moves in a microgame where it helps Mario put out a fire in a building.

Mario Kart series

F.L.U.D.D. is a special move that Mario can use in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When Mario uses the move, he will put F.L.U.D.D. on his back and douse his enemies with water.

The attack will have no effect on the opponents' damage percentages whatsoever, however, it can still have a lot of benefit to Mario, as the water can blast foes great distances, possibly resulting in a KO. F.L.U.D.D. can also be charged before use, resulting in a more powerful stream of water. It is best used at enemies near the edges of the battle.

Nozzles

In Super Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D is capable of equipping two Nozzles at a time, one of which must be the Squirt Nozzle. The others can be changed by breaking open Nozzle Boxes located at various points in Delfino Plaza and all of its surrounding areas. To change between Nozzles equipped, the player should press the X button.

  • Squirt Nozzle – The basic Nozzle, which allows Mario to shoot water at enemies.
  • Hover Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to hover in the air for a short time. Hover Nozzles are located inside blue Nozzle Boxes.
  • Rocket Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to shoot up high into the air. However, he will fall back down without hovering. Rocket Nozzles can be found inside red Nozzle Boxes.
  • Turbo Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to run at an extremely fast speed on land, or swim at an extremely fast speed in water or under the water. However, turning is difficult when using this Nozzle on land. Turbo Nozzles can be found inside gray Nozzle Boxes.

Since F.L.U.D.D. is able to converse with Mario, it's believed to be equipped with some kind of artificial intelligence. With special nozzles, F.L.U.D.D. can be used like a jet pack to reach high places or for high-speed swimming.

Trivia

  • When F.L.U.D.D. scans Mario in Super Mario Sunshine, a little window in the bottom left corner shows short gameplay clips of various Mario games, such as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64. After Bowser is beaten at the end and F.L.U.D.D. is looking at Mario, the window shows "Game Over" from Mario Bros..
  • F.L.U.D.D.'s name is a play on the word "flood", meaning a large mass of water that often causes chaos in a public area. It is also possible that his name is derived from that of Robert Fludd, an inventor who designed (but never actually made or released) many water pumps.
