Donkey Kong (known as DK for short) is a gorilla that appears in some Mario games but also has his own series. Like Mario, Donkey Kong was created by Shigeru Miyamoto.

His name likely comes from the movie monster, King Kong, who stands as one the most famous, and classic, monsters of the millennium. Kong could also mean, monkey, or ape.

The original Donkey Kong, who was supposedly Cranky Kong, DK's father, and Mario, know as Jumpman when they met, were former rivals. DK kidnapped Pauline and carried her up and up Mario's construction site, much as King Kong did on top the Empire state building with his love interest. Mario eventually beats DK and it should've ended there, But to save his dad from Mario, Donkey Kong Jr., the current DK, came to his father's rescue, making it the only time Mario was the villain.

DK later appeared in his own series of games, but it was made by Rare, not Nintendo. In those he was the leader of the ape-like Kongs.

The Two duel again in Mario vs. Donkey Kong, it was almost identically similar to the original, though it had better graphics and the newer DK.

Donkey Kong has since appeared in many Mario sports games including Mario Party , Mario Kart and Super Mario Strikers. DK's colors are often brown and yellow, stealing Yellow from Wario in Mario Kart 64 and made purple Wario's trademark color.

He has since left his playable position in Mario Party to own his own space and host his own mini-games for unknown reasons.

"A gorilla known for raw power, DK lives a carefree jungle life... unless someone messes with his bananas, in which case he just loses it. His ancestor, Cranky Kong (the original Donkey Kong) wore no necktie. His talents lead in beating on primate foes and kart-racing. Fear his Banana Ball.
