A Boo is a type of ghost in the Mario series. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, but in Super Mario World, there were Ghost Houses, which contained many Boos.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Boo's last name was Diddley, a pun off former rock star Bo Diddley, but future games referred to him only as Boo.

The Boo's Mansion in Paper Mario was a bigger version of the Ghost Houses, which had many puzzles involving Boos in it. After solving these puzzles, Bow, the princess of the Boos, joins Mario's team. In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, she and Bootler are on vacation in Poshley Heights after Mario and his teammates defeat the Shadow Queen.

In Luigi's Mansion, there are 51 Boos which Luigi must suck up in his Poltergust 3000. There are 50 regular Boos, 15 of them making up Boolossus, and there is also King Boo. See this section for more information about the individual Boos. Template:Ttydenemy In the Mario Kart series, the Boo is used as an offensive and defensive item. When activated, the Boo selects a random target, steals his item and gives it to you, and then makes you invisible and invulnerable for a short period of time.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, the Boos live in a tower called Creepy Steeple. When you first go in there is only one Boo there. He says that he misses his friends. He will let Mario through one door, where he finds a chest. When he opens it 200 Boos fly out. The last Boo asks Mario "how many of us just came out"? If Mario guesses it right he will get a prize and the Boos will fly off. If Mario guesses it right they will fly off without giving him a prize. When you go back into the main room, the first boo is there. He asks if you are going to be nice. Whatever your answer a bunch of Boos will start flying around the main room. If Mario Spin Attacks them, they merge into the Atomic Boo. If he stays still to long they will grab him and throw him out of the steeple. Mario can also fight them in other parts of the steeple. Strangely enough, the last Boo sends a letter to Mario that thanks him for freeing his friends, despite the fact that he and his friends attacked him. He signs the letter "The Creepy Steeple Boo". It may be that that boo is the playable one in sports titles.

Boo appears as a playable character in Mario Party 5, Mario Party 6, Mario Party 7, as an unlockable in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Power Tennis and Mario Hoops 3-on-3. He has been confirmed to be playable in Mario Party 8.

In Mario Party 3, Boo was Yoshi's assistant and partner. In Mario Party 4, a Boo wearing a wizard costume was the host of a music-themed board. In every Mario Partys 1 to 4, Boo has stolen coins and Stars from characters, as he was a playable character from then on. Chain Chomp took the duty in Mario Party 5. Starting in Mario Party 2, stealing coins cost 5 coins (in Mario Party it was free). However, stealing Stars was always 50 coins.

It is unknown if Boos are the ghosts of formerly living beings or if they are an actual species.

Boo's Stats and Tattle Information, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

In Paper Mario, these shy specters can become invisible, giving it a gigantic boost on the Defense side. Mario should try to beet the Boo with all haste before it disappears and starts beating up on him! He doesn't have very much Attack, but it can get very annoying if he's invisible and there's nothing Mario can do about it. It can even make its allies invisible! Hurry and beat him before it's too late!

  • Stats: HP 7, Attack 3, Defense 0
  • Locations: Creepy Steeple, Pit of 100 Trials (Levels 21-29)
  • Tattle: That's a Boo. It's everyone's favorite ghost. ...Well, most everyone... It's nothing to write home about on the Attack side, but it can turn invisible. If it turns invisible, we won't be able to hit it, so beat it while you can see it. Boos are kinda cute, but I sure wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley. If I ran into one in the bathroom in the middle of the night, I'd... Well, never you mind what I'd do.
  • Tattle Number: 71
  • Tattle Log: A somewhat shy ghost that can make itself and its allies invisible. It may be a ghost, but it's pretty cute.
