Flutters (also called Wiggler Flies) are butterfly sub-species of Wigglers with arms and gloves that first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. When hit, they turn red and angry like normal Wigglers. Instead of flying around aimlessly, though, they charge straight for the Yoshi that hit them.

History

Yoshi series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

In this game, the Wiggler Flies are only in one level, "GO! GO! MARIO!!". Just before the goal, a swarm of them appear over a flat turf. In it, they flew up and down, and charged toward Yoshi if egged or stomped. They were defeated for good with Yoshi's tongue or a Ground Pound.

In the remake, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, they appeared again, in the secret level Endless World of Yoshis. There, they were near the beginning, and only a few of them are there.

Tetris Attack

Wiggler Fly, under the name Flying Wiggler, next appeared in Tetris Attack, which strangely depicted him as a friend of Yoshi rather than an enemy. Flying Wiggler was playable in Time Trial mode, and could be fought and rescued on the Flower Stage in the main Vs. Com mode. In the SNES version, Flying Wiggler was paired with the similarly-themed Eggo-Dil.

In the Mario Party series, Wiggler Flies are called "Flutters".

Mario Party 5

They are used as Capsules in Mario Party 5, which could take players to the Star. They also appear in some mini-games.

Mario Party Advance

An individual Flutter also appears in Mario Party Advance, where she resides on the third floor of the Mushroom Condo. Two of the game's quests directly involve her. In one (Hearts A-Flutter), Flutter tells the player that she has a crush on Mr. I, and the player has to tell him that she loves him, as she is too shy. However, after learning that he said no, she still gives the player a Gaddget, Love Me Not. The other involves the lovestruck Petal Guy getting the player to deliver her a love poem (Blossom of My Heart), but, upon arriving at the condo, Petal Guy arrives and confesses his love to Flutter, but she doesn't understand what he is saying and leaves. The ending says that Flutter continues to search for a boyfriend.

Mario Party 6

It also appeared in Mario Party 6 with the same effect as the earlier one.

Mario Party 7

Flutters once again appear as a Flutter Orb in Mario Party 7. She also appeared in the mini-game Spider Stomp, where she was at the end of the level and had to be rescued.

Mario Party 8

Flutter also makes several cameos in Mario Party 8. It can be found in the mini-games Specter Inspector as one of the hiding enemies (it is found in the piano), Moped Mayhem as a racer, and in the mini-game contest Test for the Best, holding the 4,000 points sign.

Mario Tennis series

Mario Power Tennis

In Mario Power Tennis, Wiggler transforms into a Flutter for a defense shot. Also, Wiggler by default has an upwards-curved body and two hands to hold the tennis racket, making him resemble Flutter more so. If the player is to win a match as Wiggler, he will transform into Flutter because of the win.

Trivia

• The Flutters were about to appear in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 on World-e, but were taken out of the game for unknown reasons. They were to have the same behavior to that in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
