Piantissimo is very overconfident, and finds himself much superior to others. According to various locals at Pianta Village, he is considered a rogue, a creep, and not related to the Piantas. This could show that due to his attitude, he is left alone and barely challenged, adding to his superior personality with no one to go against it.

When Mario races against Il Piantissimo, the two must head to a flag that represents the finish line. If Mario wins, he gets a Shine Sprite, then completing the mission. However, Mario will lose a life if Il Piantissimo finishes first. Also, if the player replays a completed Il Piantissimo episode, Il Piantissimo will be more difficult to beat, as he will finish the course with the player's previous time.  However, Il Piantissimo can't utilize any tactics involving FLUDD.

*When looking from under Il Piantissimo's mask's chin or through his eye holes, Il Piantissimo resembles The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Times Running Man or the mailman from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. *Sometimes, when Shadow Mario stops, he strikes a pose and moves his head exactly in the same motion as Il Piantissimo does, implying that the developers used the same bones for both characters.
*With his mask removed, Il Piantissimo's face resembles those of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Times running man and, by extension, the postman from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. This can also be seen in gameplay by looking through the mask's eyeholes.
*Its possible that he might be the Shadow Mario that appears in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour alongside Bowser Jr. which would explain why the two are separate characters. This would also mean the Magic Paintbrush causes the transformation and not the bandanna.
*Mario, Shadow Mario, and Il Piantissimo all use the same animations.

Il Piantissimo, Super Mario Sunshine

Il Piantissimo is an arrogant human dressed as a Pianta who appears in Super Mario Sunshine. He must be footraced by Mario for a Shine Sprite on three different occasions: the fifth episode of Gelato Beach, the fifth episode of Noki Bay, and the second episode of Pianta Village. His role is comparable to Koopa the Quick from Super Mario 64. Il Piantissimo can use most of Mario's moves but cannot use any tactics involving FLUDD. If Il Piantissimo reaches the flag first, Mario loses a life. When the player replays a completed episode, Il Piantissimo is more difficult to beat, as he finishes the course slightly over the player's previous time.[1] The first ending screen, if not all 120 Shine Sprites are collected, shows Il Piantissimo looking at Bowser Jr.'s magic brush on Gelato Beach.

Il Piantissimo's name is possibly a portmanteau of "Pianta" and "-issimo" ("-est" or "very"), or specifically "pianissimo" (very soft), a dynamic marking in sheet music. The word "il" is an Italian definite article equivalent to "the."
