Character artwork for the infoboxes should be the most recent artwork, yes, but also artwork that is not stylized for a specific game. King Boo's artwork in Mario Party: Star Rush is his most recent appearance where he didn't have a design specific to a game. For more information, please see Template:character infobox.
Additionally, fan artwork is not allowed in main articles. The Donkey Kong Jr. image you uploaded has been deleted, but can be reuploaded for use on your userpage once you are autoconfirmed.
