When uploading files, you'll be asked to select a license for the media you're uploading. What this is really asking is to identify the type of media you're uploading. Here's an example of each type so you can make the right choice:

Type Example
Character artwork File:Mario.jpg
Any picture of a character not from a game screenshot.
Non-character, 2-D art Use this for a drawing, painting, print, or other two-dimensional work of art that isn't of a character.
Video game screenshot (includes official game sprites) File:Super mario64 02.jpg
TV show screenshot Mario and Pauline.
Film screenshot A screenshot from a movie.
Video screenshot A screenshot taken from a video. Use this if it isn't from a TV show or film. Usually online stuff.
Web screenshot A screenshot of a web page.
Video game cover File:200px-Super Mario Bros box.jpg
DVD cover DVD box art.
VHS cover File:Marioanimie.jpg
Book cover Cover art of Super Mario Bros.: Trapped in the Perilous Pit
Magazine cover File:NP Cover.JPG
Album cover File:Smashing live.JPG
Comic book cover A picture of the cover of a comic book.
Sound Clip File:Blooper Bop.ogg (Media:Blooper Bop.ogg)
Video Clip Video OGG File
Logo File:Nintendo.png
Video game logo File:SSBB logo.jpg
Promotional photo File:Revolution.PNG
Photos of a person, product, or event released by the copyright holder for use by the media.
Used with permission Select this if you've been given permission by the copyright holder of the image to use on this wiki.
General restricted use Select this if the image falls under fair use but there isn't really a category that fits it.
GNU Free Documentation License Select this if you know the image falls under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.
Lesser General Public License Select this if you know the image falls under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License.
Attribution ShareAlike 2.5 (includes home-made sprites) A Geno key chain.
Usually a picture of something taken by a real person can go here (non-promotional photo).
Free Art license Select this if you know the image falls under the terms of the Free Art license.
Public domain Select this if the image has been released into public domain by the copyright holder.
I do not know the license Use this if you really have no idea. After your media is uploaded, another user will put it under the right license and let you know where it should have gone for next time.
