Holding a barrel in the darkness

I think it's the unintended depth of the description, where "darkness" may allude to depression or helplessness, and the barrel represents a meager distraction from the grisly horrors of life. And this is ridiculous considering it's an image with a cartoon ape carrying a barrel. From what I see, a recent Internet trend is to emphasise on the hardships of life by ironizing it in some way or another. Think of Hide the Pain Harold, the yellow smiley with sunglasses, or the song "Mad World".
