Stilts are what the enemy, Stilt Guy, walks on. The stilts themselves are very sturdy and appear to be made out of a wood-like material. They first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and then appeared in every game a Stilt Guy was featured in (for example: Paper Mario). In Yoshi's Island DS, they appear as a form of transportation for Yoshi and the baby he's currently carrying (they also serve as a transportations for the Stilt Guys as well). Yoshi, in some cases, has to use the stilts to run through lava, meaning that they must also be fire-proof. Yoshi can jump off of the Stilts at any time. It is revealed in Yoshi's Island DS, that the place where Shy Guys get training to become Stilt Guys is Castle of Big Guy the Stilted.
