Star Power is a timer of sorts in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS. When a Yoshi takes damage, the baby he is currently carrying floats off in a bubble. Star Power protects the baby for a short time. Yoshi starts with 10 Star Power. For every second the baby is off Yoshi's back, the Star Power decreases by one. If it reaches 0, Kamek's Toadies take the baby away and Yoshi loses a life.
When Yoshi retrieves the baby, his Star Power will slowly restore to 10. Yoshi can also collect Stars to boost his Star Power by one for each Star he collects, to a maximum of 30. However, if the baby gets knocked off Yoshi's back while his Star Power is more than 10, it will not restore any once Yoshi gets the baby back.
