Piranha Pests are juvenile Piranha Plants who appear in only one game; Yoshi's Story, and only appearing in Stage 4-3: Piranha Grove. It is in this stage that they leave the ground and travel the skies searching for a place to take root. With one exception, all Piranha Pests do eventually take root and grow into a Piranha Plant (or Piranha Stalk if in the Piranha Grove). However, if it is a juvenile Jumping Piranha Plant, it will instead find a home in a pipe and never lose its flying body.

Piranha Pests simply resemble the bud of a Piranha Plant with a propeller instead of a stem or stalk. They have tongues almost as long as a Yoshi's, but instead of making eggs, they devour and use the prey for nutrients vital to taking root. If anything escapes the maw of a Piranha Pest, the prey is shrunk temporarily. The only known way of defeating a Piranha Pest is by shooting it with an egg.

Piranha Pests are most commonly found in the Piranha Grove, where they weave in and out of the many Piranha Stalks, searching for food.
