It's your standard Goomba

The Goomba is the first enemy to ever appear in the Super Mario Bros. video game for the NES.

They are one of the most common enemies to appear in the series, along with Koopa Troopas and Shy Guys. They are usually small, brown and walk sideways, with no specific objective to speak of. Goombas usually harm Mario by bumping into him, but they've sometimes been known to bite, headbutt or jump on Mario in order to harm him, especially in the Mario RPG series.

In Japan, they are called Kuribo, which can translate to Chestnut People.

Variations of Goombas

There are many variations of Goombas that appear throughout the series, each having even the most minor separation from a regular Goomba, ranging from strength to color to abilities.

A common variant is the Paragoomba, a Goomba with white, feathery wings that allow it to fly. Some Paragoombas are only capable of fluttering into the air, while others are capable of flying freely.

The Spiked Goomba is a Goomba with a spike on top of its head. They appear in both Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. If Mario jumps on them, the spike will hurt him, so he must hit them with his Hammer to damage them.

Tanoombas only appeared in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, where they were commonly found near the BeanBean Kingdom. They share the regular traits of the Goomba, but are covered in Tanuki fur, a Tanuki tail, and a Tanuki leaf. In battle, they are able to jump high into the air, and suspend themselves in the air temporarily by either swinging their tail or spinning around, using their tail as a weapon to attack enemies. The Tanuki leaf on the top of their head allows them to transform into Mario or Luigi, but will still feature the Tanuki tail.

Notable Goombas

Paper Mario Stats

Regular Goomba

Goomba HP: 2, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is a Goomba. Goombas are what you'd call "small fries." Actually, they're pretty much the smallest fries. ...Hey, wait! I'm one of 'em! You can jump on them or whack 'em with the Hammer. These guys are old school. They've been around since you were in Super Mario Bros.!

Regular Paragoomba

HP: 2, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is a Paragoomba. Obviously, Paragoombas are Goombas with wings. You can't hit 'em with the Hammer while they're airborne. If you damage 'em, they'll fall to the ground and become ordinary Goombas.

Regular Spiked Goomba

HP: 2, Attack: 2, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is a Spiked Goomba. Spiked Goombas are Goombas with spikes on their heads. Whatever you do, don't jump on their spikes or you'll get hurt or even paralyzed!

Red Goomba's Stats

Max HP: 7, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is Red Goomba. He's the older of the two notorious Goomba Bros. The Goomba King ordered him to try to stop you. You can take this guy, no prob. He has just a little more HP than an ordinary Goomba.

Blue Goomba's Stats

Max HP: 6, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is Blue Goomba. He's the younger of the two notorious Goomba Bros. As you heard in his little speech, he's one of the Goomba King's men. He doesn't look that healthy. He's weaker than his brother.

Goomba King's Stats

HP 10

Attack 1 (Kick), 2 (Stomp)

Defense 0

Tattle: This is the Goomba King. He's really big. I mean, look at him! He looks really powerful. He's the boss of Red Goomba and Blue Goomba. Who cares if he's strong? You're much stronger. Gee, I wonder what he ate to become so big? I'd like to be a bit bigger, too.

Gloombas (Goombas that live in darkness)

HP: 7, Attack: 2, Defense: 0

Tattle: They're stronger than ordinary Goombas, but you can take 'em.

Paragloomba (Paragoombas that live in darkness)

HP: 7, Attack: 2, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is a Paragloomba. Paragloombas are nasty winged Gloombas who make their home in the Toad Town Tunnels. Just like Paragoombas, Paragloombas lose their wings when attacked, then they fall and become Gloombas.

Spiked Gloomba (Spiked Goombas that live in darkness)

HP: 7, Attack: 3, Defense: 0

Tattle: This is a Spiked Gloomba. They're Spiked Goombas who live in the Toad Town Tunnels. Be careful of the spiked hats they wear. It'll definitely hurt if you jump on 'em.

Hyper Goomba (Goombas with green coloring)

HP: 7, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

This is a Hyper Goomba. Hyper Goombas are crazy, uncivilized Goombas living in Gusty Gulch. They sometimes charge their power before attacking. That charged attack will take away 8 HP, so watch out when they start to glow. It's a good idea to use Bow or an item to become transparent. The attack will miss for sure.

Hyper Paragoomba (Paragoombas with green coloring)

HP: 7, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

This is a Hyper Paragoomba. Hyper Paragoombas are Hyper Goombas with wings. They sometimes charge their power before attacking. That charged attack will take away 8 HP, so watch out when they start to glow. It'll miss you if you can become transparent. Except for that, they're no different from normal Paragoombas, so use a Jump attack to defeat 'em.

Paper Mario 2 Stats

Regular Goomba

HP: 2, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

That's a Goomba. Umm... Yeah, I'm one of those, in case you hadn't noticed. Ahem... It says here: "Goombas are underlings of underlings." ...That is totally rude!

Regular Paragoomba

HP: 2, Attack: 1, Defense: 0

That's a Paragoomba. Basically a Goomba with wings. I'm jealous! You can't hammer it while it's flying, but rough it up and it'll totally plummet!

Regular Spiked Goomba

HP: 2, Attack: 2, Defense: 0

That's a Spiky Goomba. ...A spiky-headed Goomba. What a creative name. That spike is super-pointy, so it's better to hit it with a hammer than jump on it. The addition of the spike means you'll hurt your feet if you jump on it. Duh!

Gloombas (Goombas that live in darkness)

HP: 7, Attack: 3, Defense: 0

That's a Gloomba. It likes dark, damp places. It's stronger than a normal Goomba, so be careful. That's not a healthy color for a Goomba, but it doesn't mean it's sick or anything. So don't show any mercy!

Paragloomba (Paragoombas that live in darkness)

HP: 7, Attack: 3, Defense: 0

That's a Paragloomba. It's a Gloomba with wings. It's like a stronger version of a Parakoopa. And maybe that's all there is to it. I wonder if living down here ever makes its wings moldy? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYUCK! It's too gross to even think about! Bleck!

Spiked Gloomba (Spiked Goombas that live in darkness)

HP: 7, Attack: 4, Defense: 0

That's a Spiky Gloomba. It's a Spiky Goomba that likes dark places. Max HP is 7, Attack is 4, and Defense is 0. Its Attack is pretty high, huh? I'm sure you know this, but try not to jump on the spike. I wonder if I'd look like that if I stayed down here long enough? ...I'd rather not think about that. Are there tanning salons in Rogueport?

Hyper Goomba (Goombas with green coloring)

HP: 8, Attack: 2, Defense: 0

That's a Hyper Goomba. Which means... Umm... It's a hyperactive Goomba! Duh! But if this nut goes BIZZ-ZOW and charges up, his Attack power will be 8 next turn! So you'd better wipe it out between the time it charges up and the time it attacks! And if you can't beat him, then run away, OK?

Hyper Paragoomba (Paragoombas with green coloring)

HP: 8, Attack: 2, Defense: 0

That's a Hyper Paragoomba. It's basically just a Hyper Goomba with wings. After charging up, you'll be dealing with moves that have an Attack power of 8. Once you damage it, it'll lose its wings and turn into a regular Hyper Goomba. Not that THAT'S all that cool. Even normal Hyper Goombas are dangerous.

Hyper Spiked Goomba (Spiked Goombas with green coloring)

HP: 8, Attack: 3, Defense: 0

That's a Hyper Spiky Goomba. It's a Hyper Goomba with a spike on its head. After charging up, its Attack power rises to an incredible level of 9! That's SCARY... Beat it before it attacks, or you'll be in peril before you know it, seriously. If only this book listed a way to dodge that attack...
