Breakable block from Alleyway
Three types of breakable blocks on Stage 1

Breakable blocks,[1] also known as space grids,[2] are rectangular objects that can be destroyed by objects bounced against them.

History[edit]

Alleyway[edit]

In Alleyway, breakable blocks are required to be destroyed to complete the stage. These blocks can be broken with a ball, and they are present in every stage of the game. Breaking these blocks grants points. In Bonuses, the ball passes through these blocks while breaking them.

In total, there are three types of breakable blocks:

  • White blocks give one point.
  • Gray blocks give two points.
  • Black blocks give three points.

Gray blocks and black blocks cause the ball to speed up.

Breakable blocks reappear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island with a similar role. They appear in a handful of stages, most prominently in the fight against Tap-Tap the Red Nose. They appear in green, yellow, and red, and hitting them with an egg causes them to advance to the next color, being destroyed when hit while red.
