Yoshi no Cookie: Kuruppon Oven de Cookie is a Japan-only edition of Yoshi's Cookie, exclusively for the Super Famicom. It was developed by National Human Electronics (now Panasonic) and released in 1994[1] to promote their new Kuruppon oven. Only 500 copies of the game were produced, and they are now very expensive collector's items.[2]
While an identical copy of the SNES version of Yoshi's Cookie is included, an additional mode is available in which Yoshi moves around on a map similar to Super Mario World's, navigating a small, unknown island. By surveying around and selecting areas, Yoshi is able to cross bridges, hop over blocks, and swim in river streams. Along his tour, Yoshi teaches recipe tutorials in the local buildings that players can use to bake real versions of the cookies featured in the game.[3][4]
Modes
Cooking
In this mode, the player controls Yoshi, traversing a small map and visiting buildings where different game modes relating to baking cookies can be played. The map is traversed in a similar manner to Super Mario World, as Yoshi walks across dots on the road. A blue tile with a white star constantly teleports between the dots, and, if Yoshi stands on it, he is teleported to the bottom right corner of the map. There is also a pair of tunnels set on the bottom left and top right of the map that may serve as a shortcut.
Cookie Kyōshitsu
In Cookie Kyōshitsu (クッキーきょうしつ kukkī kyōshitsu, "Cookie School"), the player may learn the recipes for the three kinds of Yoshi's Cookie, taught through visual but non-interactive tutorials.
Zairyō no Yakata
In Zairyō no Yakata (ざいりょうの やかた zairyō no yakata, "Ingredient Mansion"), the player must look through the cabinets of a kitchen trying to find all the required ingredients for a certain type of cookie amidst other ingredients, items and enemies. Before starting, the player must select the cookie type and a time setting from three options: "SET TIME 1" for a 3:00 limit, "SET TIME 2" for a 5:00 limit, or "time off" for no timer.
While the kitchen's layout is always the same, the ingredients are in random spots. If the player finds all ingredients required within the time limit, a congratulating message is displayed and the player returns to the map. There are eight available slots for ingredients (labeled 1 through 8). Collecting unnecessary ingredients do not automatically make the player lose, but running out of available slots without all desired ingredients does end the game in a loss.
The ingredients that can be found in the kitchen are:
The required ingredients for each type of cookie are:
型抜き クッキ~ Kata nuki kukkī (Cutter Cookie) |
|
---|---|
絞り出し クッキ~ Shibori dashi kukkī (Piped Cookie) |
|
アイスボックス クッキ~ Aisu bokkusu kukkī (Icebox Cookie) |
Besides ingredients, the player may find two kinds of creatures that will hinder the game's progress and two kinds of items to dispel them. These items are placed in the exclusive last slots for them, labeled A and B. When one creature is found, it moves around the kitchen for a set timer and Yoshi is prevented from gathering ingredients until he finds the required item to defeat it. Failure to do so until the time expires causes the creature to trigger an adverse effect on the game.
A rat creature known as チョロン choron may also be found, and doing so will increase the timer back to its starting value.
