Extension platform (Kanaami Road)

Extension platforms are objects that appear in several installments in the Mario Kart series, though they primarily appear in Mario Kart Tour. In later games, they are usually colored red, though they can appear in other colors as well. Their main use is to fill in gaps on courses.

Red extension platforms are used to build many parts of the road in Wario Colosseum, with several sections only featuring extension platforms as part of the road. Other than that, they serve no other purpose.

Mario Kart DS

Yellow extension platforms are used as the road in Tick-Tock Clock.

Mario Kart Wii

Extension platforms later appear in the Mario Kart Wii course Koopa Cape. Unlike its previous appearances, extension platforms are now commonly paired with ramps.

Mario Kart 7

Extension platforms return in Mario Kart 7, where they are used more frequently. They appear in Toad Circuit, Mario Circuit, Rock Rock Mountain, Bowser's Castle, and Wii Koopa Cape. Orange and yellow versions also appear in Piranha Plant Slide and Wario Shipyard, respectively. In this game, they can also be paired with Dash Panels and Glide Ramps, with Piranha Plant Slide utilizing this mechanic in its underwater section. In the same course, they are used to act as a higher part of the course, which can only be reached via current.

Extension platforms return in Mario Kart 8 on Sunshine Airport, DS Wario Stadium, 3DS Piranha Plant Slide and Super Bell Subway. The first three courses feature the new black variation, though the red variation returns in Wario Stadium and Piranha Plant Slide. A new blue variation also appears in Super Bell Subway. Like in Piranha Plant Slide, it is used to act as a higher section of the course. DS Tick-Tock Clock also uses special yellow extension platforms that have a different appearance compared to the other variations.

In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the red variation returns in 3DS Toad Circuit and the second lap of N64 Kalimari Desert. The latter course bends it to the left and pairs it with a ramp, which references the usage of these platforms in Mario Kart Tour's trick variants.

Mario Kart Tour

Extension platforms are extremely commonly used in Mario Kart Tour. They are almost always used in T and R/T variants (only a few variants like 3DS Daisy Hills T do not use them) and paired with a ramp in this game, as their main use is to provide more Jump Boosts and Dash Panels for the player, which in turn provides more points. They can also be curved, which allows the player to go to a different route compared to the original variant. For example, in GCN Baby Park T, a curved extension platform with a Glide Ramp is used to change the route of the course. In courses like SNES Donut Plains 1R/T, there are no ramps located on the extension platform; instead, the ramp is curved in a way that allows the player to perform more Mini-Turbos. In some courses like N64 Kalimari Desert T, extension platforms are used to create ramps themselves. Extension platforms can also be found in the air without being lifted. Brown versions of these platforms are found in Amsterdam Drift 2T.

These ramps are also sometimes used in reverse variants of courses, with their use being to send the player upwards in courses where the player normally goes downwards, like in 3DS Rock Rock Mountain. They are also used to create roads at the end of gliding sections, like in DS Airship Fortress R, where they can prevent the player from falling. Extension platforms are also added at the start and end of most Glider Challenges. Wind can also pass through extension platforms.
