Mario doing a Double Jump.

The Double Jump (also called Midair Jump in Super Smash Bros. series) is a move used by every playable character in Super Mario 64 and its remake, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Super Smash Bros. series, New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, and New Super Luigi U. The player must simply Jump twice in a row to use it (jumping three times in a row executes a Triple Jump). It goes a bit higher than a normal Jump, and can be used to reach high places.

It is noticeably one of the few jumps the player can use while standing still. However, in the New Super Mario Bros. games, the user must be running at full speed.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, it can be performed by all characters in all four games (Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U). This move can be performed by pressing the Jump button or tilting the Control Stick upward when a character is in midair, which will make the character jump again, though most of them can only do so once before landing. This move can serve many helpful purposes in a match, such as reaching high platforms and recovering from being knocked off of the stage. Some characters' midair jumps can go higher than other characters', and certain characters, such as Kirby, Jigglypuff, King Dedede, and winged characters can even perform multiple midair jumps without touching the ground.

Certain items can change the effect of a midair jump. For example, a Bunny Hood increases the height gained from both a normal jump and a midair jump, and the Screw Attack item, when equipped, turns any character's normal and midair jumps (first midair jump only for those with more than one) into a spinning attack that deals damage to the opponent. When a character is carrying or using a heavy item, such as a Hammer or a Crate, they will be unable to perform a midair jump.
