Ryu is a character from the Street Fighter series by Capcom who appeared in every Street Fighter title since the first game. He is a practitioner of a unique martial art skills known as Ansatsuken. He appears as a downloadable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, marking him the first downloadable character to be either a newcomer or a third party character. Players who purchase him off the Nintendo eShop also get his Street Fighter II stage, Suzaku Castle.

Just like in Street Fighter series, he uses various fighting skills from the said game. He retains most of the moves he uses in the original series. His neutral special is the Hadoken, his side special is the Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, his up special is the Shoryuken, and his down special is Focus Attack. In addition, by inputting the original Street Fighter button inputs for these moves, the moves are stronger when executed. Ryu also has two Final Smash attacks, the only character in the series so far with this distinction. If used normally, the Final Smash is a Shinku Hadoken, which sends a larger Hadouken across the screen that can pull in fighters; if used next to an opponent, the Final Smash is a Shin Shoryuken, which is a more powerful Shoryuken.

Trivia

  • Despite being the first and only Street Fighter character to appear in a game featuring Mario characters, Ryu did not appear in the German Club Nintendo comic Super Mario Klemp-Won-Do: Muskeln sind nicht alles!, which featured many other Street Fighter characters. However, he had previously appeared along with Bowser in the film Wreck-It Ralph.
  • Ryu's newcomer artwork is the only newcomer artwork besides Palutena's and Shulk's and the only group artwork to not feature Mario himself.
