Walleyes are a species of Whomps that first appear in the game Super Mario 3D World. They are Wallop-like creatures with spikes on their sides and back.

History

Super Mario 3D World

Their first appearance was in the level Ty-Foo Flurries. They move from side to side in an attempt to stop the player from walking past them. Contact with their spikes will cause damage, but their fronts and backs are safe to touch. Walleyes can be temporarily dazed by a projectile or a claw attack and can be destroyed by Golden Statue Mario.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Walleyes return in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, having the same abilities as in Super Mario 3D World.

Other appearances and references

Although Walleyes don't appear in Super Mario 3D Land prior to their official debut in Super Mario 3D World, a sub-species called Wallops act similar by moving side to side continuously to block Mario's way. Wallops are the same as Walleyes, except they have smaller heads without spikes on the top and hands which the Walleyes have, besides different eyes. Unlike Walleyes, Wallops are unable to be stunned by Mario's attacks (such as being whipped by Tanooki Mario). If Mario and Luigi jump, then the Wallops jump too.
