Bunbuns are bee-like enemies that reside in the Birabuto Kingdom of Super Mario Land. They soar overhead, then drop their spears on Mario. Jumping on them would clip their wings, sending them crashing to the ground and awarding Mario 800 points.

The gruesome defeat of a Bunbun

It is interesting to note that when Mario stomped a Bunbun, it would instantaneously turn into a skeleton; this means that, unlike many enemies, it is very obvious the Bunbun have died. This is not typical of most Mario games and is therefore a unique trait. This is somewhat more gruesome than most defeated foes, although far from the most gruesome death shown (one particular death in New Super Mario Bros. highly resembles the death of Crocomire from Super Metroid).
